The Gun was manufactured in 1861. FYI - The Springfield Armory Museum has one on Display with SN:5684.
They a good bit of info on the Merrill Carbine's @ http://ww2.rediscov.com/spring/VFPCGI.exe?IDCFile=/spring/DETAILS.IDC,SPECIFIC=9895,DATABASE=objects,
It was sold to the Dept of the Army so I think they would be who to contact for ownership info.

Who invented the m1 carbine rifle

The rifle was originally designed by Jonathan Browning, brother of John Browning, but died before the design was completed.
Winchester hired David "Carbine" Williams, who had began design on a "short-stroke" gas piston design, having him finish the M1 design.

How do you reinstall the safety on a mi carbine

If you are unsure of what to do, I would suggest you take your carbine to a gunsmith. Safety is an important thing to have installed right!

.30 M1 carbine marked Saginaw SG with a serial no 3433616

Seems these guns are kind of a convoluted mess with the way they were produced in two different factories with overlapping serial numbers, and factory markings. Here's a link to a good forum on the guns and the process by which they were marked
