Mine JUST did this for the first time 5 minutes ago. I just flipped the kitchen breaker off and on and no more issue. For now, at least.

Hello Dennis;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service technician.

You did not provide a model number. So, I am going to speak in general. It sounds like you have a bad or stuck contact switch. Or, you ice dispenser handle is broken and activating the dispenser.

You contact switch will look like the following:

the ice dispenser door keeps opening and close by - 25331098-tf0pl124dzd5m1czyqgpxhkh-4-0.jpg

There are two slots on the bottom of the dispenser frame for a flat head screw driver. Pop the bottom out. The rest of the frame is held by plastic tabs. Push in the sides to remove the frame.

Ground yourself by touching something that is steal. Static electricity will knock out a board. Remove the board. You will see the contact switch.

Send me the model number and I can be more specific.

Go into the following web site and put in your model number for diagrams and the part number.

Walk in freezer solenoid not opening

Many Kenmore side-by-side refrigerators have an ice and water dispenser installed on the outside of the freezer door. The ice dispenser has a flap that opens to allow ice to be released, and closes after dispensing to keep the cold air inside of the freezer. The dispenser flap is opened and closed by a solenoid, that when energized pulls the plunger attached to the flap, opening the door. If the flap stops opening and closing, it is likely due to a faulty solenoid.

Ice dispenser appearing to get stuck in the open

The noise is probably the solenoid which operates the door or the one that switches it from cube to crushed ice. Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman";} You'll have to look to see what's wrong.

Remove the dispenser cover by gently prying starting at the bottom going round and round a little at a time to prevent from breaking it. When it's off the screws will be exposed to access the other components.
Here's a diagram of the dispenser which may help.

Whirlpool Gold Side By Side Ice Dispenser Problems

Instead of what you think the sound is, try and see what is happening when you actuate the ice lever. open freezer door, depress the door light switch, or tape it closed. now actuate the ice dispenser lever, does the flapping door open, that which opens to allow ice from bucket into your glass? Now look at the bucket itself, do you see the gears rotating? remove the bucket from the door, and repeat, do you see the auger shaft rotating?

Either of these are a complex repair, one I would not recommend DIYers to try on their own, for they require taking the door apart, and if not done right, your door may not close properly. Normally I have no problem advising a repair, but there are some i dont, this icemaker system, and compressors.

GSH25KGRWW dispenses ice/water all by itself! Heard noise last night, and refrigerator was dispensing ice all over the floor!! Attempted to stop by tapping the lever, but this had no effect; pushed water...

as you explained that by opening the freezer door the problem stopped the problem is: that you have a pinched dispenser wire or, two in the area between the door and, the door opening
these wires are low voltage so they are not going to cause a fire
but, if they touch the cabinet due to a bare wire they will ground and, start running the dispenser.
the door cover needs to be removed and, the problem (usually at the door hinge must be found and, corrected i.e. wire taped, shielded etc.

Ge, tfx26kpda ww, ice maker only dispences crushed ice

At least yours is making ice. Mine wount even make ice. While toubleshooting my prob, I notice a metal rod on the bottom of the ice tray. This rod opens and shuts a plastic "trap door" in the tray. The position of that door determines whether the ice is crushed or whole. If the trap door is open the ice falls through the dispenser freely. If the door this closed the ice is force thorugh metal teeth where it is crushed then dispensed. Open the freezer door and take the ice tray out. You should see a hole at the back of the freezer that the metal rod goes through. In that hole there is a plastic square that moves up and down. If the set your dispenser to crushed ice, leave the door open, push in the door switch at the bottom, and press the dispenser. The plastic square does nothing while the motor is turning. That allows the door to stay closed and forces the ice through the metal teeth. If you set the dispenser to whole ice and do the same thing the plastic square is suppose to lift up forcing the door open and letting the whole ice drop freely. The plastic square probably does nothing even if you set it to whole ice. That mean the trap door never opens focing the ice to always get crushed.

Unfortunately, I have no solution because mine works and I had no need to investigate further. I hopes this helps you figure out the problem though

Good Luck.

Ice maker

MAKE SURE THE DOOR CLOSER IN THE DISPENSER IS OPERATING PROPERLY. IT SHOULD SLOWLY CLOSE THE DOOR AFTER YOU STOP PRESSING ON THE PADDLE.
EITHER THE DOOR IS CLOSING TOO QUICKLY, NOT AT ALL, OR THE DISPENSER IS RUNNING AFTER THE DOOR HAS CLOSED. CHECK THE OPERATIONS OF EACH OF THESE AND SEE IF YOU CAN TELL WHICH.
