Replaced black ink #8 with refilled cartridge from Cartridge World. Can't get message "In has run out" to go away, despite holding down the Stop/Reset button for over 5 seconds. Advice?

Just press and hold Stop/Reset (inverted triangle in a circle) button for five seconds. This is because there is a memory chip in this cartridges and this chip shows the ink level. In your case the chip is not restarted.Pressing and holding the Stop/Reset button will releases the function for detecting the remaining ink level of the above ink.The printer shows empty cartridges but it will printing.

My canon mp140 shows E4

From CANON FAQs for your printer:

Issue: ERROR LED: E, 4
Solution: Press and hold Stop/Reset button for at least five seconds.
Clearing the Ink Error If you want to continue printing in this condition, press and hold the <Stop/Reset> button on the printer for at least five seconds, and then release it. Replace the ink cartridge and close the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover).
If printing is in progress and you want to continue printing, press the Stop/Reset button for at least 5 seconds with the ink cartridge installed. Then printing can continue under the ink out condition.
The function for detecting the remaining ink level will be disabled.
Replace the empty ink cartridge immediately after the printing. The resulting print quality is not satisfactory, if printing is continued under the ink out condition.

I have a Canon MP700 Printer. The message "waste tank nearly full" appeared. As I couldn't find any help in the manual I removed the ink cartridges to look for a "waste tank". ...

Dear miggsy,
Waste ink absorber capacity of your printer has rise to about 90-95 %. Tentatively, you can continue printing by pressing STOP/RESET button. When ink absorber capacity reach about 100%, the printer stop working and message 'Waste Ink Tank is Full' appears.
To fix this problem, you need to reset waste ink counter. It strongly recommended that you replace waste ink absorber after resetting waste ink counter.
Here are steps resetting waste ink counter of this printer:
  • With the machine power off, while pressing STOP/RESET button, press and hold the ON/OFF button. (Do not release the buttons).
  • While holding ON/OFF button, release the STOP/RESET button. (Do not release the ON/OFF button).
  • While holding the ON/OFF button, press the STOP/RESET 2 times and then release all buttons. (Each time STOP/RESET is pressed, the alarm LED and COPY lights alternately starting with alarm LED).
  • When the COPY button lights in green, press STOP/RESET button 4 times. (Each time STOP/RESET is pressed, the alarm LED and COPY lights alternately starting with alarm LED).
  • Turn off the printer.
Your printer should work normally now.
