This is usually caused by a defective shutter release switch - it'll have to go into a repair shop - independent shops will charge about $110 USD - Canon charges about $180

Generally a fuse blows on these, on the DC/DC converter (psu ) board. This is situated on the front of the camera, fairly easy to get at just involves undoing loads of screws!! The fuse is marked "K", replace or short out with a thin piece of wire. May be caused by changing lenses with the power on, but not sure.
Watch for the charged flash capacitor though!!
Had this problem with mine.

Go to this site and try emailing them: www.camerasandparts.com They just service the Canon Powershot cameras and they are wonderful for help with these. They do excellent work and are about half the price of Canon. Hope that helps, best of luck with the problem.
