How do I remove "autorun.VV01inf" - a variant of Generik.MFNZBXQ trojan from my external hard disk?

I am currently using ESET Nod32 which removes this virus, however, this virus regenerates every time i remove it. I also have Autorun Exterminator installed, but to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.

Use Malwarebytes a free remover, also delete all your restore points.

Use CCleaner to clean up your startup items, the do a regedit command from start run, and search for that name. Delete all entries with that name.

Testimonial: "I have used Malwarebytes but to no avail. I'll try with CCleaner now."

Win32/Spatet.A trojan

while I am not familiar with the "eset" A/V program (actually never heard of it before) I would STRONGLY suggest that you go to their website and try whatever forums may be there first as that anything that we would have to say might very well "kill" your system because there are SO many versions of WIN XP (OEM, Home Pro, etc) and they would have VERY intimate knowledge of the software that you are using.

Make ESET NOD32 Anti-Virus Auto Scan Flash Drive

Everyone doesn't want computers infected with a virus. The question is, where the virus entered into the computer. There are two possibilities, may be infected from the Internet or external device (flash drive, memory cards, external hard drives, etc). Flash drives are external devices that are often used. When we insert the flash drive to the infected computer, flash drive will be infected with the virus. In a flash drive that is infected, will form the autorun.inf file. Autorun.inf files will work automatically, every flash drive is inserted. Setting the default operating system is windows autorun when inserted an external device. Autorun windows, used by the autorun.inf, to enter into the computer. To protect your computer from viruses, there are a few things done:
1. Update anti-virus
2. Setting anti-virus in the guard position
3. Turn off windows autorun
4. Make anti virus auto scan flash drives

Turn off autorun Windows

Win Xp : Press START - run - regedit - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer - NoDriveTypeAutoRun - Value Data - Type = ff - OK

Win Vista / 7 : Press START - Control Panel - Hardware and Sound - Autoplay - uncheck "Use Autoplay for all media devices" - SAVE.

Make ESET NOD32 Anti-Virus Auto Scan Flash Drive

Using software USB Safely Remove. Open software USB Safely Remove - click View - Options - Global Autorun - After device plugging - click Add process to launch list - click browse, open directory C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET NOD32 Antivirus\ecls.exe - Open - then double click the drive letter, to add parameter %DriveLetter% - then, on the tab File name and parameters, write /log-file=c:\report.txt /log-rewrite /aind - OK. Features of NOD32 Antivirus

ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4 is the most effective protection you can find to combat today's huge volumes of Internet and email threats. It provides comprehensive antivirus and antispyware protection without affecting your computer's performance. ESET NOD32 Antivirus is also one of the fastest antivirus solutions. Using advanced ThreatSense technology, ESET NOD32 Antivirus proactively protects you from new attacks. ESET NOD32 Antivirus detects and disables both known and unknown viruses, Trojans, worms, adware, spyware, rootkits and other Internet threats. Nod32 offers a number of great features that enable you to monitor the security of your computer with history/report logging and routine notification of the latest viruses.

Like many security solutions, the primary function of ESET Nod32 is to detect and block viruses and other infections, a task it easily succeeds at. This software can be run in two different ways: by a simple scan or by customizing your options and running a scan from the Control Centre. The Control Centre gives you access too many great features and numerous scanning options including NOD32, DMON, IMON and EMON. Here is a rundown on a few of the Nod32 scanning features:

  • NOD32 - this component is the most powerful tool against viruses and other infections. It acts as the resident scanner, functioning in the memory of your operating system at all times.
  • DMON - this scan thoroughly combs through office documents and files directly downloaded from the web.
  • IMON - this scanner can be viewed as your front-line defence because it monitors web traffic using HTTP, FTP, SMTP and various Winsock protocols.
  • EMON - this scanner is responsible for detecting viruses that may have originated from email messages.

While this is a highly advanced program, Nod32 allows you to get up and running with a simple installation.

Unable to remove virus

Try Trojan Remover, http://www.simplysup.com/ Alot of times virus scanners will pick up autorun.ini files on a memory cards and assume them to be a virus. If Trojan Remover doesn't find anything, then its probably nothing. AVG, NOD32, and Avast are known for false alarms

What is a WMA/TrojanDownloader?

officially labelled WMA/TrojanDownloader.GetCodec

Win32/GetCodec.A is a type of malware that modifies media files. This Trojan converts all media files found on a computer to the WMA format and adds a field to the header that includes a URL pointing the user to a new codec, claiming that the codec has to be downloaded so that the media files can be read. WMA/TrojanDownloader.GetCodec.Gen is a downloader closely related to Wimad.N which facilitates infection by GetCodec variants like Win32/GetCodec.

This is a tough virus to remove so I suggest removing it early on. It can cause alot of damage to your media files.
