Connect the external hard drive to your computer and run a data recovery program. Give this one a go if you're on a Mac.

Hi
Don't use the drive at all until you are in a position to start a recovery scan.
To do this you need:
A working computer that you can attach this drive to as an extra.
Another drive (external or the boot drive) large enough to save any data
Appropriate software for the data recovery.
The software is the most difficult to specify as some are better at some recoveries than others. I have had some success with Pandora Recovery, available here:
http://www.freewarefiles.com/search.php?query=Pandora+recovery&B1.x=7&B1.y=11&boolean=exact
or PC Inspector File Recovery, available here:-
TechRadar
There are many Recovery programmes out there, you may find another you feel happier with, but both the above have worked for me.
Once you have downloaded and installed the software to your computer, read the help/instructions carefully before you start.
Basically there are three steps to recovery :
Firstly a full scan of the affected drive. Be patient this can and often does take hours, especially with larger drives.
Secondly the programme compiles a list of the files it can recover, often with an estimate of the probability of the file being intact and usable after recovery.
Thirdly identifying those files you want to recover and telling the programme where to save them once recovered - NOT the drive you are recovering from.
Hope this is helpful, if so would you please register that with Fixya
Cheers

WD MyPassPort 320 GB partially dead after an attempt to make it Win8 recovery drive.

Maybe you can try to format it to see if you can get the space back. But one thing important is that you may need to backup your files first. If not, you may lose them. Or you may try some file recovery tool after you format your drive. This may be help, I've try it, workable. http://www.uflysoft.com/data-recovery-mac/ Hope it can help and hope you can get back your 320G back.

I have a HP Pavillion dv5 from 320GB HDD and now it is giving me 0 GB. What can be the problem and also what can I do with the HDD.

If it's not partitioned it will show up with 0 GB, it might need to be formatted and partitioned. If it's bad it shouldn't show up, instead of showing a 0 for the disk space. If your battery died while installing or formatting the drive. Really might help to have a few more details also.

Samsung sp0802n HDD enclosure. I installed everything. The safe remove program detect the massage storage, but the hard drive icon does not show.

Has the hard drive been formated?
To format the drive, plug the external drive into the USB port - go to the Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Storage - Disk Management. The External drive should be listed as USB drive. On the lower panel, right click on the USB Drive and click on Format, and format it in NTFS.
After formating you will be able to use it as a normal hard drive.

Seagate 750GB usb HDD asks to format, when opening by double click

The disk is either damaged or the USB interface is damaged.
1) You could try opening the external case and connect the disk to your computer directly (Using IDE/S-ATA cables)
2) Format the HD and use data recovery software/service.

External Toshiba 400GB HDD not recognized on my Dell CPx J650GT

New hard drives need to be formatted! So go into the control panel switch to classic view, ( if you are still using category view for the control panel ) open administrative tools, then open computer management. Next open disk management. In disk management your new drive will show as raw, you will be give the option of formatting the drive, select primary partition and format in NTFS.
This will then format the drive, when this has finished your new drive will appear in my computer.

Format 320 GB HDD problem

Have tou tried the mangement in windows, My computer> right click>manage, then disk management and then right click on your hard drive and then one of the options is to format. Although only 127gb will show and the rest should show as a seperate partition, do the same with this to implement it. If no other partition shows you may have to upgrade your motherboard bios to suport large capacity disks.
