Hi
There are not many ways to upgrade a laptop without expensive professional help, in which case it is usually more economic to put the money towards a more up-to-date model.
You don't mention your particular model so I will have to write generally.
The only user upgradable hardware parts are the hard drive, the RAM memory, and possibly the optical drive.
These can usually be accessed by the removal of a few screws and a cover on the base of the machine.
Hard drive. Options here are a bigger hard drive with more capacity, or a Solid State Hard Drive which will give you much higher speed of operation. You need to be sure of the connections and make sure the drive is compatible.
Memory. You must make sure that the memory module you get is compatible with your machine in terms of type, DDR, DDR2, DDR3 etc. and suitable capacity. Don't go above 4Gb if your Operating System is 32 bit.
Optical Drive. If it is already a DVD as is likely not much point replacing it.
In terms of software, the only real upgrade you can do is with the OS. Windows 8.1 is the latest Windows version currently available, and I would normally recommend the Pro version although the Home Premium version is also acceptable. Make sure that your laptop can run this and that you back up all your data before you attempt to upgrade your drive in any way.
Hope this is helpful, if so would you please register that with Fixya
Cheers
