We got the flame out but can still smell gas. Turned gas valve off.

It is confirmed by you that therre is no gas flow .
So this is the critical missing link to the fault.
We must trace the flow of the gas from the front regulator valve . So using a good air jet, if you can get compressed air to blow into the pipes , it will be helpful. so open the gas inlet and check flow till the valve. Now check the flow from the valve to the ovenflow pipe.
if there is no air coming through use a thin wire to puch in for removing dirt / rust.Blown it out.
Check if the nozzle jet is blocked in the valve assembly through which the gas comes in. USe a thin needle to clean the jet.
Once you have established a clean flow of air , put back all the removed parts and connect the gas.
It must work for sure..

SOURCE: On my Maytag Gemini MGR6875 the flames on the burners are too high on high and go out on low.
If you haven't changed the stove regulator to natural gas this could be your problem. If you are not comfortable with making this adjustment pleaee check with your gas company or a licensed appliance service person to do the work it should take just a few minutes.
