You are in for a bear of a job. GET THE CODE FOR THE RADIO before you disconnect the battery - there should be a credit-card sized card in the owner's manual with the code, alternatively clever previous owner may have used a sharpie to write it on the radio itself. The dealer can get it by the VIN if it's the original radio.

That said, the dash mostly comes out. The heater core is against the firewall in the center over the transmission tunnel.
You work your way in from both footwells and by removing the radio/AC panel etc.

I'll link the best instructions on the job that I've seen. Volvo 700 900 Heater Core Replacement

Two things - if you're in a relatively warm climate, you can bypass the heater core with a piece of pipe between the hoses under the hood.
Alternatively, you could try pouring a third of a bottle of "Bar's Leak" leakstopper. It's for radiators so don't use the whole bottle, just a bit to stop the leak, add a little more if it still drips into the car.

That's a good fix for another year if you're not planning on keeping the car. Please, PLEASE, disclose that if you do sell the car to someone else so they don't get stuck with an unexpected repair.

You're welcome. One thing I forgot to mention is that the 1995-1997 Volvo 960 (wagon and sedan) are the same car as the 1997-1998 S90 and V90. Sometime you can google more answers by searching for "volvo 960 heater core" instead of "s90".

SOURCE: Replacing heater core in 2000 GMC sonoma. Dash is

If the dash is removed you've saved about 9 10ths of the job endurance. Look around, what you believe to be, the perimeter of the heater box. I cannot, and no one else can, tell you exactly where the bolts and nuts that mount the heater box are. Therefore you must viually sixe the box and check outide in the engine compartment and inside under the dash for the mounting bolts. You'll want to start by removing the heater hoses. Then starting at the passenger side engine compartment look for a group of 10mm or 7/16ths nuts retaining the housing and remove them. Do the same inside. The housing is usually held together with screws or clips, it changes year to year. Keep a log or pix of the wires and cables and hoses(vacuum) that are connected to the housing for reassembly. You'll need to "roll" the box out from under the dash depending on how much of the dash has been removed. The core is easy to spot for is has two hoses sticking out, and, is encircled with clips or screws . Also make sure you remove the bracket around the two entry hoses if it has one. Thank you, Dana

SOURCE: heater core removal in 92 ford taurus

You'll have to remove the dash in layers. The heater box is the last thing you actually get to. It's not a fun job. It's a very time consuming job. I believe "book" time on that job is around 8 hours. Even guys like me that have done these before take longer that what "book" times is.

SOURCE: How to remove the heater core from a VW GolfMK3

there are alot of hidden screws holding the dash in. there are some up across the top of the dash by the windshield and defrost vents. also when you open the doors there are some in there. it is quit a difficult job I really dont recomend doing it yourself but if your not afraid to try and feel confident enough to tackle it good luck. it would be best to have an experienced mechanic do the job but it will cost over three hundred for labor. if you do it yourself go to a parts store that sells haynes repair manuals they cost about twelve dollars and are pretty helpfull.

Testimonial: "Thanks for the advice, I will find a manual and if gives some form of help I will do it myself. If not I will pay for it to be done. Thanks."

Do I need to remove the dash to remove a heater core in a 1998 Volvo S70 non turbo 5 cylinder?

Don't remember exactly , but I think it could be done without dash removal.
It's done from driver side footwell area , tight but possible.
You have to take out lower center consol side cover , next to the accelerator pedal and roll the carpet out of the way, and you will see the heater core case. Remove cover on the case (some have it on the side , some on the bottom). Two pipes going from firewall to the core have to be disconnected before core removal (will leak coolant , have some rags on the floor to absorbe it).
Slide heater core out , put new one in gently as the accelerator pedal is on your way , try to avoid damaging core a lot.
Always replace heater core pipes o-rings.

Cost and how to repair a heater core on a 1994 Volvo 850 Wagon.

The heater core on your Volvo is an easy fix. The dash does not need to come out. You remove 6 screws from the center console, pull that out of the way, pull back the carpet and there she is. A couple more screws, a tug to the back to remove the bad core and you replace in reverse. Put down a plastic bag or catch-can to get whatever coolant comes out when the core is removed. I thought I was in for an expensive repair until I researched and saw how easy the job was.

Dashboard should lift up once all screws are remove and you can pull towards you.
Lower the position of the tilt wheel if available.
Remove blower motor for heater if necessary,
Be careful with the connector for the heater door. You can remove the heater door carefully, don't mess up the felt
disconnect heater hoses remove heater core.
When connecting heater hoses, make sure you connect them the same way again, and apply sealant to the hoses before tightenting clamps. You sure like hell don't want a leak after you mount everything back.

I ran the heater while I had the dash board off just to make sure there were no leaks. Reverse procedures to install at your discrection. Suggest you follow all steps in reverse so you don't end up with screws you can't figure out where they go.

Its about a two day job if you do it alone. They charge 900 at the dealer for doing this. Can't understand why in the world FORD just doesnt make an access system so you can remove the core without removing the dash board. Yes I do...........MONEY! No wonder American car mfg. are in such a pitiful state the the foreign car market is kicking ***. American cars to change the fuel pump you have to drop the tank. Japanese cars to change the fuel pump you go to the hatch over the tank remove the hatch and remove the pump. Get the picture!!!!!! Good Luck.
