For every format (MP4 is not one, but dozens of formats and no standard) you need a player, or on a computer a setting in a program. A DVD player, only can play one format, a DVD format. Actually it is even a coded format. When you have a MP4 file, you should encode it to to the DVD format and then but it to a DVD, before you try to play it in a DVD player.
