I DID A DEFRAG AND ERROR CHECKING ON MY PORTABLE 1 TB AND IT SHOWS NO PROBLEMS BUT WHEN I COPY DATA ONTO IT THE DATA SHOWS BUT CAN NOT BE USED HOW DO I FIX IT ?.....
This sounds like a compatibility problem between the computer your using and the format (logical structure) of the portable disk.
Many things can cause this but it sounds like you have a portable disk formatted with the NTFS structure that is used with Microsoft Windows computers and are trying to write to it using an Apple Macintosh computer, possibly a laptop (MacBook, MacBook Pro, etc.).
This may not be your problem but lacking more detailed information I'll give this a try this since it exactly describes your problem and provides a workable solution.
The Problem :-
Macintosh computers are not very compatible with Windows devices. They use an operating system called "OSX". OSX can read data from a Windows "NTFS" formatted disk, even error check it, but it can't write to it or repair it unless a utility program that provides NTFS Read & Write ability is installed.
The Solution :-
I use just such a utility, it is available from Paragon Software and costs about $17.00 and gives native Read/Write capability to NTFS formatted volumes.
While you could "Reformat" the portable disk with the OSX Journaling format to make it compatible with Macintosh computers, doing so would wipe all data already on the disk, I'm sure that's not what you want. Using the Paragon NTFS compatibility utility is better in that you would not have to do anything with your portable disk so you would not lose any data already on It, instead it would just give your Mac the same native Read/Write capability that Windows uses thereby making your portable disk Read/Write compatible with both Macintosh and Windows computers. A far better solution.
That's only one of the many possible compatibility problems that could be causing the problem, most problems like this can be resolved by providing me with more information would with allow a more accurate diagnosis.
