try this, take off the top cover. plug in the heater and when the humming starts, rotate the fan sharply with a screwdriver. keep your fingers away from the fan. if the fan spins under power your start winding is shot. get a new motor. www dot desatech dot com

check to see if the photo cell is clean.to check it open the side compartment and look for the blue and white wire comming from photo cell,on the reset switch there is a white wire and a blue wire.hook these two wires to gether at the switch and try to refire the unit.if the unit keeps running the photo cell is bad and NEEDS to be changed.if the unit shuts off the safety switch is bad.

When you say that the fan starts then stops I assume you also mean that the burner starts and stops. If this is correct and the unit is more than a couple of years old you probably need to change the filter in the back and set the pump pressure. Both the filters and the gauges to set the pressure can be found at www.reddyheat.com along with a good explanation as to why you need the gauges. The pressure is set by bleed air pressure and must be exactly 3.5 psig. The gauge is the only accurate way to do it. The filters clog and change the pressure. When the difference is enough the unit will not run. Now with that said there are several other things which you should check. Check the fuel tank for water. Remove any you find. Remove the cover on the right side as you look at the unit from the front and remove the circuit board. Check for cracked connections. If you find any resolder them and reattach the board. That should take care of the unit and get you back to making heat. Let me know if you need anything else.

Water in the fuel tank, I personally had this problem this morning irritating but was simple to cure. Empty your fuel in to a clean five gallon bucket and observe, fuel is lighter than water and will float on top water settles to the bottom. You now have to dry out the tank, get creative I stuffed mine with rags and sopped it all up, this worked fine for me. You can siphon off the fuel from the water and re-use the fuel. Just be careful not to siphon off the water with it.
