Our A/C unit stopped working through the night. Usually we shut it off every night and then start it back up in the morning. The fan usually turns on first then it takes awhile for the ac to kick in and start working; it always has a loud grumble when it first kicks in and starts cooling the air. However last night there was a severe thunderstorm and we got a lot of rain. This morning before we decided to clean out the filters but put everything back the way it was. Now all that we can get working is the fan portion even though it is on high cool. All fan setting work properly. The AC unit is a Duo-Therm model 54615-G46. Do AC roof units need to run for awhile to dry out after a long hard rain or does this sound like our AC has died?
No, the units are sealed and the rain should not have affected the system at all. I would remove the outer cover of the unit and access the capacitors. Your start capacitor may be bad. You can visually inspect this and tell if there is a problem. Small black relay on top of capacitor often burns out, if so, replace capacitor and relay. If this looks fine, then we need to start at the thermostat and work our way forward.
Thanks,
Jeff

We found the capacitors however one is bigger then the other. The larger one has four wires connected to it and the smaller one only two wires. The smaller one sounds as though there is liquid in the smaller one. Which one is the starte capacitor and which one is the running capacitor?
