My frost free fridge freezer is working but flashing de on the front. I'd like to know what it means

The front of the fridge has a display panel of the temperatures both for top compartment and also for the freezer. So where it displays the temperature for top compartment (fridge) the letters " de " keep appearing. What does this mean?

Error codes are brand (and often model) specific. "de" likely indicates something in the defrost process, especially on G.E. Check for ice build-up in the freezer cooling coil. The control board would be suspect, but must be checked to confirm the precise fault.

SOURCE: IFrost Free Sharp Refridgerator & Freezer-Fridge not keeping cold

You have a defrost problem. You need either the defrost timer, defrost heater, or the defrost bi-metal. If you have a meter you can ohm out the heater and the bi-metal ( as lonh a s the bi -metal is frozen as it opens when it gets warm to cut out the defrost heater) if you have an ohm reading on either one of the two the replace the defrost timer, if you don't then replace the part that has no ohm reading.

Fridge too cold!

don't forget that just turning down your fridge temp dose not mean your problem might be over yet. the freezer setting may also be too high & that will affect your fridge temp as well. i set both my control settings to around 50% of what is on the scale & that works perfect for my 7 yr old fridge. also, very important, is make sure the freezer portion is going through it's full defrost cycles, or it will freeze the upper portion inside the fridge. you should not have any frost build up in your fridge, nor should you have any in your freezer. that's why they call them FROST FREE. try the slow temp decrease over a period of a few days & hopefully that will work for you. good luck.

The "de" is flashing on my display. I know it

Try the reset procedure:--- Turn the fridge freezer off by the wall socket for 10 minutes. Then reconnect the power again and see.If that is not helping then ,DE is most likely indicating a defrost problem.. open the freezer and take a look at the back of the freezer wall - is there a bunch of frost on that back wall? If the ice is collected there then unplug the unit for 24 hours to manually defrost it or take a hair dryer and defrost all collected ice to defrost the ice quickly. There also could be a temperature problem due to a defrost failure, easy to check the freezer temperature to confirm.---------------- Thank you.

Our top mount Kenmore fridge (Model # 253.77872509) is frosting up in the freezer section. Have turned off & defrosted the freezer on several occasions - it works for a few weeks but then begins...

Hi,

Normally when frost build up occurs it's because warmer outside air is getting into the freezer and the moisture from that warm air cools and condensates then freezes into frost or ice. You either have a bad seal like the other listing states try leveling the front a little higher than the back. Or you may have an issue with the defrost heater, thermostat or timer. Do you have a light that comes on from time to time? If so you have an auto defrost unit. If there is no light you may not have a frost free freezer which means you will have to remove the frost manually.

Frost free freezer icing up

It should still be covered under the warranty.

How to check everything
http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php
check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

My Bosch frostfree fridge freezer keeps icing up!

My Bosch Frost Free Fridge Freezer did the same thing - Ice forming in the bottom of the freezer area after a few days.

It was caused by a blocked drain pipe - When the freezer does the de-frosting cycle, the melted ice drips into a tray and tehn runs into a dish on top of teh compressor, through a pipe.

If this pipe gets blocked, the de frosted ice overflows from the tray and overflows into the bottom of the freezer and then re-freezes !

To fix, pull the freezer away form the wall, locate the pipe that runs to the dish on top of the compressor and blow through it - This should clear it. Alternatively, from inside the freezer compartment, pull off the cover at the back, but the clips holding it on will probably break off, as mine did ! You can sort of push the cover back on and re-fit the food draws.

Hello Mr Barnard

Welcome to fixya

You said, You have a zanussi fridge freezer combination, it is a frost free model, And you're developing lots of frost in the freezer which never used to happen and the fridge is not getting cold, some condensation does appear inside the fridge, it is 2years old.

Frost could mean a few things.
Is the freezer cold but the fridge not?
If so the freezer may be so full that the articles are covering the air vents in the back that share the cold air with the fridge.
I've have seen the freezers packed to the hilt!

More things to check.
Is the condenser in the back or under the front of the fridge. If it is under the front of the fridge you must remove the plastic grill`(The condenser is the thin black metal tubing that runs back and forth to make up your condenser). This needs to be free of dust and have air passing over and through it!
they sell refrigerator brushes for this at the hardware store.
I have had customers that never ran the brush under there ever and had 1 to 2 inches of dust and lint
under there between the tubes. After a few hours it was cool the next day it was cold!

The freon level pressure should be checked in case you have a leak.
The thermostat may be bad.

Let me know what works for you.
