You didn't say what model you have but often it's in the menu settings or there is a feature seen on the screen or camera knob that shows a small clock face.

How do you set the cannn 500d to date stamp pictures that you view

If you want to see the date /time info while viewing the pictures on the camera, you can change the display settings, press the DISP button, till you see a smaller picture and the date and time on the bottom of the screen.
If you want the date and time printed on a picture, you should use the pict bridge option from the camera and in the setup you should chose the setting for that. See page 165 and following from the manual.
But the simple timestamps of the yellow or orange stamps like in the older digital cameras, won't work.
Because the camera keeps a all information stored in the EXEF part of the picture, it won't destroy the jpeg it produces. If you really want the date and time imprinted, you should use a program on the computer, to use the date and or time info and brand it in the picture, before saving it.
Be aware all pictures do have the date and time info in them and most viewers on the computer (whatever OS) will show the info when asked, anyway.

Can anyone tell me how to set my camera up to capture shots of the Aurora Boreleas?

I don't think there is one correct setting.
There are several ways to find out what is best for your camera. Some (seamy) professional camera's can shoot to very high ISO settings, so they can take pictures in shorter times.
You should start with a good tripod, because your camera will need seconds in stead of tenths or hundreds of a second.
At home, set up your tripod with camera on a bright night. Try to make pictures of the sky with shutter times like 1, 10 and 30 seconds. Look on what picture you have a good contrast between the stars and the background. That should be the starting point when shooting the aurora. Get used to long shutter times and how the camera reacts, because saving a picture that took 10 seconds to take, will take another 10 seconds to save.
You also could look up some pictures from the Aurora Borealis on Dpreview or Flickr and see what the settings of the camera's were. Would be great if you found pictures made with the Canon Powershot SD600, but if nit, you still can see what you can expect .

If i put my camra on self timer win i print the pictures will the time show up on the pictures

The time it took the picture? You want to know if the camera will show the time it took the picture using the self timer?

My answer is Yes and No.

Do you have your camera set to showing the date and time on the pictures now? If you do, then using the self timer would not change anything.

If you do have it set to showing on the picture and you don't want the date and time to show then change the setting on the menu function of the camera and turn this option off.

If you do not already have the camera set to show the date and time, using the self timer option is not going to make it suddenly appear.

How can I set date time stamp on pictures........I have set it on camera, however its not stamping??

The camera stores the date and time (and a lot more) with each picture, but it won't deface your pictures by splashing numbers across them. If you want the date and/or time printed with your pictures, please refer to the documentation for whatever program you're using to print them. Depending on the program and the printer, you may have the option of printing the date stamp on the picture, in the margin, or on the back.

Setting date and time on photo

As long as the current date and time are set correctly, the camera will always store the date with the picture. If you want to print the date with the picture, please refer to the documentation for whatever program you're using for instructions.

Won't print date on picture

Hi there.
You have to set the time and date to show on the picture using the camera's menu before you take the picture.
You cannot add the time and date to a picture after you have taken it except with photo editing software.
Go into the camera's menu and select the setup option, scroll down to imprint (or something like that) and set it to date and time, press OK or save and from now on the date and time will automatically added to your pictures when you take them.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!
