I have a 2003 RA Rodeo 3lt Diesel. Was running fine and suddenly stopped revving past about 1850 rpm. Starts fine runs smoothly in all gears up to 1800 rpm and then starts "missing", running rough. Back off the throttle slightly and every thing works again. Changed both fuel filters and no change. Any ideas where to start?
Greetings, I read your question and I think Reliable-Store can help you in this. Here's the site link.

I had the same problem with My 1990 F150 300 6cylinder 4x4.....I cahnged all the same things you did, finally I sprayed a can of Gumout through the throttle body and it worked and ran great. Now I add fuel injector cleaner to the gas and a regular clean with the gumout and the problem has'nt come back. Good Luck to you and hope it works!

My guess is injectors. The early duramax's had a lot of injector problems. They sometimes get to where they bleed constantly, and sometimes they break off... bad stuff. Check your oil for diesel. When my dads injectors when out on his 01 D'Max, his truck would run ok for a while, then lose power. Computer will cut power when it picks up an injector problem. BTW, Sightseer, diesels dont have spark plugs, however, the diesel filter is a good idea, you have to change them pretty regularly on the D'Max engines ( in order to try and prolong the injectors lives, mainly, the smallest bit of junk in your fuel can screw those early injectors up quick) I think they got the injectors mostly straightened out in the 04 models, what I've heard is thats the best model Duramax there has been, fuel economy, power, and reliability. Too bad all the year models arent that way :/

Testimonial: "right answer but I received it much too late. I went to a mechanic and paid him to fix it."

it sounds like you have a injector leaking down into one of your cylinders so it is flooding out a cylinder thus runs rough and long cranks.

try replacing the throttle position sensor
