A bit more information is needed; is this a Moentrol or a Posi-temp valve? You will need to shut water down to the shower. If it is a Moentrol, it could be an issue with either the cartridge or the pressure balancing spool. If you are at least getting water, I am going to assume that it is a Moentrol.
You will need to turn water off to the valve. Pull the cartridge and examine as to whether or not debris is blocking the supply holes of the cartridge. If your valve has built in shut off screws, you can slowly turn water on to clear any debris that may be inside the inlet port. I typically use a piece of PVC to go over the valve body so that water does not leak between the wall and the shower. Again, just turn water on enough to start it flowing.
If you do not notice anything amiss with the cartridge, it could also be the pressure balancing spool. If that is on your valve, it will be a flat head screw about the size of a nickel. Water will need to be off for the removal of the spool as well. Again, you will be looking for debris that is blocking water flow.
If this is an older Moen faucet, you may just want to replace the cartridge while you have it removed. If it is a push/pull, it is a Moentrol. If you have to turn the handle for water to come out, it is a Posi-temp. In my area, the cartridges run from $20-$40. However, Moen does offer lifetime on their cartridges. Lately, I have had a few more hoops to jump through to get the replacement cartridges from Moen, but they are still very pleasant to deal with.

SOURCE: Moen shower/tub faucet

hi... yes that's a very common issue with moen "cartridges" -- it's very simple to fix..... grasp the handle and give it a gentle tug upwards when the water is on... if it retracts again, pull the handle out again and tug again but this time a bit harder. Not sure what causes this on new cartridges but it will fix your issue.

SOURCE: no cold water from Moen 2253 tub/shower valve,

Here is a quick check to see if the cartridge may be at fault allowing the cold and hot to mix. Turn off the hot water supply, with hot water supply off turn faucet on. Turn to the hot and cold sides, If you have only cold water then your faucet cartridge is at fault or the cartridge housing is worn. Shut all supply valves and remove cartridge and inspect housing for signs of wear. If wear is visible a new shower valve is needes. If none visible replace cartridge. I have included a link of a PDF file an exploded parts list. I hope this helps in solving your problem. Please rate if the answer helps in any way. Good Luck and have a great week. Jeff

SOURCE: can you adjust hot to cold ratio on moen single

Pull off the handle and there are limiters located under it. They come set with not enough hot allowed, I have found. It is an anti scalding issue.

I've been given an old (10+ yrs) Moen shower control valve that I want to use (it does apparently have pressure balancing built-in), but don't know which side is hot and which is cold. Does Moen always...

Moen and all shower valve manufacturers follow american federal guidelines. Hold the unit in your hand with the handle facing you - the left side is the hot water inlet and the right side is the cold water inlet.

How to adjust temp control for sigle lever shower control

Temp control is only accomplished by moving handle to desired position. If your asking is the hardware that in behind the single lever going to allow for adjustments, then the answer is NO. I installed the same into one of my bathrooms several years ago and I know what I am talking about. The single handle on that type on mine starts off then cold to hot. Problem is I wait for hot water to max so I can adjust it down to a comfortable temperture to prevent being burned. I refuse to buy one for other tubs. The 2 handles make temperture much easier with less wasted water used until its hot. Remember if you decide to replace with a two lever model then you will have to replumb the pipes for a two handle hardware unit (thats the stuff behind wall that your single handle goes into to which is currently plumbed for a single handle hardware unit.)

No hot water on Moen single handle shower faucet. cold ok and shut off is fine

do you have hot water elsewhere? if not, might be that your water heater is not heating.
if you do have hot water elsewhere, did you let the faucet run for a minute or 2.
did you have hot water before? is this a new house? new valve?
need a little more detail.
on posi temp valves, if there were no water coming out of the hot side of the valve, the valve will not operate.
