Blu-ray is the next-generation digital video disc. It can record, store and play back high-definition video and digital audio, as well as computer data. The advantage to Blu-ray is the sheer amount of information it can hold:

  • A single-layer Blu-ray disc, which is roughly the same size as a DVD, can hold up to 27 GB of data -- that's more than two hours of high-definition video or about 13 hours of standard video.
  • A double-layer Blu-ray disc can store up to 50 GB, enough to hold about 4.5 hours of high-definition video or more than 20 hours of standard video. And there are even plans in the works to develop a disc with twice that amount of storage.

M lg bp145 quit playing blue rays but it will play dvds. Why?

Blue ray DVD's are read by a Blue violet LASER. I know that sounds pretty obvious but the colour blue is closer to the upper end of the spectrum and therefore has a shorter frequency and therefore you can generate and read much narrower data tracks. DVD's and CD use an older technology and use Red laser light which has a much wider and therefore less compact track size. So with a lower track density you get less information on a DVD.

The blue laser can be used to read both formats (and CD) but when reading the Blue ray disc the accuracy required is far greater to hit the track. Tracking errors caused by worn gears steppers and spindles can cause the Blue ray to miss the track but still have enough tolerance to read the much wider DVD/CD track.

The laser head isn't one laser, it actually produces two separate wavelengths, one for Blu ray discs and one for Red ray (DVD/CDs)

You can have a condition where the "blue-violet Laser diode fails but the red laser diode is still working. In this condition, it will exhibit exactly the effect you are experiencing.

Blue ray player wont play a new disk says it needs

Software updates have to be done on bluray players whenever the technology in bluray discs themselve is changed. If you call the number for 20th century fox on the back of the bluray a representative there will explain to you what has changed technologically in this bluray that has caused there to be software updates for all of the bluray players. I believe LG can send you a disc so that you can update your player. Give them a call. The bluray players are all manufactured and shipped to the stores. In the meantime if an update is needed and its sitting on the shelf at the store until you buy it, even if you've just bought it an hour ago it will still need to be updated. The stores do not unbox the blu ray players and update them for you. However the Geek squad will update bluray players for customers for a fee.

Will not play Blue Ray DVD

I had the same problem. Try this. Contact Sharp and have them email you the firmware update. You will need to download it from the email and transfer it to the player via a flash drive. See if that works. I am about to return my Sharp Blu Ray player to Costco and go back to DVD. There seem to be a lot of problems with the technology. Even when movies start to play, they have freezes and it is sometimes hard to get the menu to show up
