try adjusting the brightness knob on the system. i once had that same problem with mine. The ccfl tube (the main battery drain problem in most portables) might be burnt out or something. You can replace it with LED's i think.

This will need a new voltage regulator i think, either that or the cold cathode driver is faulty.

try replacing some of the capacitors, that is mostly what causes the problems in the gamegear, mine had the same problem.

how many games do you have and have test it?...have you tried cleaning the sega slot?
there is also a tiny chance that are the cables...
btw.. i loved that console.. i liked it more than the SNES.. you are so lucky to have it..
