SOURCE: Brush bar can't spin

Hi There,

Actually I just answered a question almost identical to yours! The belt on his model continiously snapped also.

I walked him through how to check the problem, and he was able to get his vacuum fixed. It really sounds to me like your brush roller has gone bad as well.

Also here, another link to the exact roller brush that your model take on our website if you haven't already purchased one.

I hope this helped your your vacuum!

    No power in the brush

You may have either excess friction in a bearing or a slipping belt. Unplug the vacuum cleaner, remove the bottom plate, try turning the motor pulley by hand. If it is very hard to turn, remove the belt, then check the brush bearings and the motor bearings to see where the gum-up is. If it turns normally, try turning the motor pulley with one hand while holding the brush with the other to see if there is any slip in the belt or in the brush pulley. If the belt is loose, first check for loose screws or broken motor mounting posts. If those are all good, and the motor is as far back as the screw mounts let it go, the belt is probably stretched and should be replaced.

The rotating brushes on my floor setting keep stopping on carpet - even though nothing is clogging it. I have to turn my vacuum off and then back on to get it to start spinning again.

There are two things that cause this.

    1) The suction is not good and is not making the turbine head run. Clean the filters/ head and check the hose for blockages

    2) The Turbo head has more friction than it should. Remove the brushes from the turbo head and remove all hair etc from the bearings with tweezers.

If it still does not work the the most common problem is the bearing retainer in the turbo head has heated up and come loose. This is a very hard repair I do but for most they should buy a new turbo-head.

Turbo head on DC39 animal will not spin. I have removed any hair etc caught around the brush but still no spinning..

I have the same problem with my DC39 Animal's brush bar. Im on my 3rd one in 9 months of ownership. The DC39 brush bar is driven pneumatically (there is no electric motor in the brush head) and switched on and off via a suction activated pneumatic ratchet within the brush head. The moving components are actuated by bellows. Ive found that the glue holding the bellows fails stopping the ratchet working intermittently at first and then completely as the bellows comes away completely. At first you can help the ratchet by tapping the brush head - the red ratchet ring can be seen to click round. This, in my opinion, is an inherent weakness of the DC39 design and cannot be easily repaired. The only solution is a new brush head. Luckily Ive got a 5 year warranty and at the current rate I will have got through about 20 brush heads !

The turbo brush attachment on my bissell cleanview helix suddenly wont spin. I bought this vacum a month ago. there is nothing wrong with the vacum otherwise.

The turbo brush may just need to be cleaned. If hair or other large debris gets wrapped around the brush, it can prevent it from spinning. Since the top of the turbo brush is clear, you can look in and see if there is a lot of hair wrapped around the brush. If so, you can open it up by removing the two screws on the bottom of the brush and popping the clear cover off, then cleaning all the debris from the brush (scissors work well if its hard to get dog hair off). Be careful to see how the brush goes back together as you take it apart.

If cleaning the brush doesn't fix it, the belt might be broken. As you're looking at the top of the brush, there is a little belt that goes from the brush itself to the large blue/green gear (it's red on some models) so that if you reach your hand in and turn the gear, the brush should spin. If this belt is broken or missing, it will need to be replaced. You can probably find a replacement belt online, or you can order a whole new turbo brush from the Bissell website for $24.99.

The turbobrush for my cleanview helix 22c1 is not working

It's probably either just dirty, or the belt is broken. If it's dirty, you can just take the cover off (two Phillips head screws on the bottom) and clean everything off the brush.

If the belt is broken, you can tell by turning the large gear at the back of the brush -- if the brush turns when you spin the gear, the belt isn't broken -- then you'll need to replace it. You can buy a new belt online, or you can buy a replacement Turbo Brush directly from Bissell ($24.99).

    Hope that helps!

    Brushes not working

Check the filter from the bottom, it has a red frame, pull it out far enough to clean it, if it is clooged, then the brushes won't spin. If it is clean, pull the brush block out, make sure the shaft that goes up into the turbine is not brokked off, if it is replace thebrush block. With the brush block out, turn on the machine and look up where the brush block goes, there is a square hole, if it is turning, then it is ok, if not, then the turbine is either clogged up or the turbine has gone bad.

Took apart turbo brush and don't know where to put belt to make brush spin...what two things should it connect?

    Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.
There are 2 types of Turbo Brushes, the electric type driven by a power head or power nozzle most likely used on a canister type vacuum or a central vacuum driven by electricity and there is an air driven power head. In either case the belt should be riding on the brushroll pulley on the end or if it is an air driven power head, sometimes the pulley section is in the middle, and the other end would run off the motor pulley / shaft. If you have a flat belt it is suggested that you change the belt every 4 to 6 months, if you have a geared belt, suggested change would be one year or so. I am not sure on the Brand of turbo brush you have, but you can refer to your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or the yellow pages, or contact the manufacturer for a phone # or website address, some times if you have a air driven turbo power brush it may be cost efficient to replace the brush instead of repairing the turbo brush. Just a suggestion.
Example: www.turbobrush.com – this may or may not be the website address not knowing the brand name.

I have taken the brush heads off and pulled all the hair out of the small gap between the chrome shaft and the plastic gear housing. Then a small amount of 3-in-1 oil into that gap to lube the internals and just a little through the air intake on the side of the head to clean and lube the seals and it works like new. This lasts about 9 months under high use and the process takes roughly 10 minutes.
