Vacuum is spewing dust out of the front vent! We have the Dirt Devil 12 amp bagless upright. Hoses are clear, brushes turn, everything fine except dirt blows OUT instead of going into canister. How can we open motor compartment?

Hi! We actually don't recommend opening the motor compartment. It sounds like there may be a clog somewhere in the vacuum that you are unaware of. Please try following the steps below.

Remove the hose from the vacuum from both ends and check it for clogs.

Lay your vacuum face down, remove the bottom guard and brush-roll

Use a wooden spoon or something similar to help break up and remove any clogs from the lower hose.

Check and clean all the filters on the vacuum. If they are really dirty they may need to be replaced.

If there no blockages in the hoses, then the next thing to check would be any filters in the vacuum. When these get clogged, you will experience this problem.

Vacuumed dirt does not enter container. Dirt spews out when turned off.

More than likely you have a clog some where so that it does not pull the dirt all the way to the hopper. I would check hoses and filters and any tubing from the floor attachment all the way to the dirt container. Hope this helps!

Fix it yourself? Perhaps. You need to open up the compartment where the Motor Drive is located. Inside you may find a Motor Belt that has gone bad and needs replacement. The manufacturer has replacement belts. They are easy to put on...so go for it.

Vacuum was closed without the bag now I can't open the compartment

After trying many things, I was finally able to open the stuck cup by:

Opening the latch as much as possible by hand
Sticking a flathead screwdriver in the opening and pushing. See picture below.

There was just a small bit of plastic holding the thing shut so this was enough to deform it and open it without damaging anything (at least for me).

I have no idea why they have designed the cup in this foolish way. Maybe it's an attempt to protect the motor etc, but it would be better to have a sensor or something and not let the motor run instead of getting the cup stuck. Also, I think the cup is supposed to not be closable without the filter in place, but for me it was surprisingly easy to close it in this incorrect fashion.

Remove the 4 screws in the Dust Bag compartment.

Remove the Power button and Cord-rewind botton. This involves using a screwdriver or knife to open/undo a plastic clip located under the bittons near the gril in the top-centre-back of the hover.
When holding the clip back, slide the button towards the bottom of the hover (IE: away from the bag compartment) till it pops out (this can be fiddley).
This will then reveal 4 more screws (within the springs and near the grill).

Then prise the hover open to reveal the motor and power-switch.

Inspect the filter.Open the secondary filter on the base of the vacuum to ensure that dirt and debris have not collected on the filter, as this will limit motor performance. Remove the filter from the dust compartment and rinse with water to clean. Allow it to dry completely and return to the dust compartment.--------
Also check if dust bag is got over full and that is causing the problem.Open the dust compartment, take the old dust bag out of the bag holder and discard. Open the end of a new dust bag and attach to the dust bag holder. Close the dust compartment and tighten the dust cover.Also check properly that dust compartment is not got loose. Open cleaning attachment and check the hoses and nozzles on the frequently to ensure that they are free of dirt, obstruction or hair.Also inspect the brushes, if there is already dirt got stuck in the brushes and that is causing the problem.Clean the brushed.---------- This will help, to confirm where the problem is and to resolve the dirt /debris issue.----- Thanks.Helpmech.

Dust will blow out of the front vent of my Dirt Devil Featherlite Bagless Vacuum. It seems to be shooting out dust that I just vacuum up, but I can't be certain.

Dust blows out of the filter vent is usually caused by a plugged filter drop the filter door on the back, replace or for a temporary fix blow out the filter
