How long will the smoke detector continue to chirp if I cannot get to it to change the battery?

Could take weeks before the battery finally gives out, depending on the quality of the battery.

My smoke detector is chirping even with new battery

Hello, Julie -

1. Try removing and resetting the new battery in the smoke detector.

2. If the smoke detector still chirps, I suggest just purchasing a replacement smoke detector unit.

We have a "main" smoke detector (along with others inside bedrooms and in corridors.) When the "main" smoke detector chirps, we have found we have to replace it, with a fresh battery, entirely. To make sure we purchase the right unit, we remove the entire thing from the ceiling mount and take it to the hardware store.

Best wishes.

I have disconnected all smoke detectors, but there is still a chirping coming from one of the locations. there is no smoke detector at that location any longer. why is there still chirping?

The chirping must be coming from some physical object. Sometimes it can be difficult to locate a chirp. Maybe there is a CO detector nearby. Those chirp also.

Chirps come from ceiling not unit

Only the smoke detector will chirp. When they begin chirping it means the battery is very low and needs to be replaced. Replace it and you will find the chirping will stop as it will when the battery is totally dead.

Schematic? Need to try to solve RFI problem.

try inserting aluminium foil around the smoke detector to shield it from radio frequencies leaving only the holes uncovered to let moke in and sound out.

Smoke detector removed from ceiling. Only wires visible, but I still hear chirping.

Look at the detector you removed, and all others that may still be wired in.
They all have battery backup. Although the detectors are hardwired, the chirping is coming from one of the detectors to let you know to change the battery.

Had customer with CO detector sounding quick double chirp about every five minutes. What is this?

This is not a beeping smoke detector. It is probably a CO detector that was installed by your alarm company. GE model 240-COE will give a double beep every 5.5 minutes when the device reaches end of life. Call your alarm company to have it replaced.

Kidde smoke alarm won't stop chirping . I have replaced the batteries and nothing seems to fix the problem

Most smoke detecotrs have a limited lifespan of 5-10 years. On the underside of the detectors should be a sticker with installed dated or replace by date. If changing the batteries doesn't stop the chirping it is most like time to replace the detector. If you check the manufacturer website they will give you a life expectancy for your detector.
