Question about Amazon Kindle 1
The battery got low, so I recharged it overnight. On wake-up, it was acting slow, not directly responding to commands, so I charged it longer. It then went to the books list menu, but would not open anything, and upon reboot, it will not respond to anything; it is stuck on the wake up screen & will neither shopw books, other menus or turn off. Is it dead or can it be recovered.

Try a different charger. If that fails too, you have a logic board issue. Amazon should give you a replacement. If you're out warranty, you can get the part at Kindle Repair and there is a guide that shows you how to open a kindle and install parts at Kindle Repair Guide.

Reset your Kindle.
There's a little hole inside the battery cover area. Put in a pin or paperclip end and press. The Kindle should unlock.
Hope this helps.
