As per you, you do get a display. It is a good sign. Press the menu button on your remote control, while the TV is switched ON, and go to its menu option; which displays the "System". There select the system to "Auto". If the system is not configured right, the picture will be not there. Making it 'Auto'; the set itself will adjust for the incoming signal type to it. If you're not fully aware about it, refer its user manual or contact any technician.

Good news, your 42 inch Phillips has a built in digital tuner, all you need is an antenna.
Please post the model of your other Tv and I will check on the tuner type.

its the audio amp, its fried and needs to be replaced. match the numbers up and purchase/replace boards, this will solve your problem.
