Initial Setup

One adjustment is important before we get started. By default the 12C displays only two decimal places. This is not enough. Personally, I like to see five decimal places, but you may prefer some other number. To change the display, press "F" and then the number of decimal places you wish to display. I would press "F 5 " to display 5 decimal places. That's it, the calculator is ready to go.
You need to hold the "F" key.---------

2. Press the number key for the desired number of decimal places (0 through 9).

The selector you are asking about is the "decimal selector". The result displayed/printed, will be in a format according to the position that you have selected as follows:
f = floating (the result will be in the number of decimal places that were entered on the keyboard
4= fixed 4 decimal places (x.0000)
3= fixed 3 decimal places (x.000)
2= fixed 2 decimal places (x.00)
0= fixed 0 decimal places (x)
add 2= (add mode*,fixed 2 places) ($.00)
Note* "ad mode" automatically enters the decimal place when entering the number on the keyboard. If you enter "123", the displayed ammount will be "1.23". If you enter "1", the display will read ".01". This is a useful setting when adding a list of numbers in a dollars/cents format, however, be careful, if entering a whole dollar ammount "three dollars" be sure to enter the decimal point, or enter the number as "300". If you don't, the result will be ".03", instead of the 3 dollars you intended.

CUT: Values are cut off to the number of decimal places speicified by the current Decimal Place Selector setting

UP: Values are rounded up to the number of decimal places speicified by the current Decimal Place Selector setting

5/4: Values are rounded off (0,1,2,3,4 are cut off; 5,6,7,8,9 are rounded up) to the number of decimal places speicified by the current Decimal Place Selector setting

You need to set your decimal selection to full-floating if you expect any numbers to be more than 4 decimal places.

Each time you press the DEC key it changes the decimal selection. From F to 0, 2, 3, 4 and A in that order. F is "full floating" but appears as a blank on the screen. A is the "add-mode" for currency transactions. The "A" does show on the screen if this is your selection.

As soon as the letter for the number of decimal places you want ("F" is blank just before 0 decimals) appears on the screen you are "ready to go." Problem is, the decimal indicator numbers and letters are so tiny and screen is so difficult to read that under many lighting conditions your selections might be all but invisible. They are in the upper left side of the screen just to the right of the equally difficult to see multiplication and division rounding indicator "5/4." PS If the 5/4 does not appear on your screen then you have set the round-off function to not available.

Say you have a repeating decimal number 0.714285 714285 714285 etc. You identify the period (the repeating part) and in this case it is 714285.
You count the number of decimal places in the period: here it is 6. Your equivalent fraction is
Fraction= period/(99...9) where the number of 9's in the denominator is equal to the number of decimal places in the period. For this case, that is 6.
Thus
0.714285 714285 714285 etc.= 714285 / 999999

Reduce the fraction and you will find 5/7

This technique works for a repeating decimal number where the period starts just after the decimal mark.

If the periodic part does not start right after the decimal mark there are modifications to be made.

You must then press the Enter key to lock in your choice. I would press 2nd, ., 5, Enter to display 5 decimal places. Now press 2nd, CPT to return to a blank screen. Problem solved.

One other adjustment is important. The BAII Plus comes from the factory set to assume monthly compounding. That's fine, I suppose, but its better to set it to assume annual compounding and then make manual adjustments when you enter numbers. Why? Well, the compounding assumption is hidden from view and in my experience people tend to forget to set it to the correct assumption. Of course, most people don't recognize a wrong answer when they get one, so they blithely forge ahead. To fix this problem press 2nd then I/Y and enter 1 when prompted. Now press Enter and then 2nd, CPT to return to a blank screen. Problem solved.

However, the numbers it displays depends on the number of decimal places to which you have it set (choice of 0–9 or floating decimal). To set the number of decimal places displayed to three: hit [2ND][FORMAT][3][ENTER]This setting also continues indefinitely (even though the calculator is turned off and on) until it is changed.

1. Press 2ndF and . the point button. This changes the screen to FIX DEG
2. Press 2ndF +/- 2 Answer shown is to 2 dec. pl.
3. If you want it to 5 decimal places, Press 2ndF +/- 5 answer shown is to 5 d.p. and so on
   

For normal, just take calculator out of FIX so just DEG shows.
