I have a Hitachi 50UX58B V81023108, about 12 years old. The picture looks great but jumps or shakes. Any ideas what might be causing this. Does not do this all the time but starting to do this more and more.

If your unit is truly a 1993 model I'm amazed that it still turns on at all. Usually projection units quit after about 10 to 12 years and are worn out. Judging by the age of the unit the most likely problem area is the high voltage section. I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r6396176-projection_tv_troubleshooting which explains how to troubleshoot this section and I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r6981868-replace_circuit_board_in_modern_tvs which explains how to remove and replace a circuit board if it becomes necessary to change out the deflection board.
Its a convergence problem. You can get complete parts and instructiosn for this fix from TvRepairKits.com. They put together a kit for this. I used them for a convergence problem recently and they helped me fix my set.
I want you to do a simple visual check of something that will tell me what the problem may be.
Go to a channel that is in black and white--old movie and tell me what color the screen/picture is.
You can also turn the COLOR in the customer menu all the way off and look that way.
What we are trying to see here is if TRACKING is set correctly or has changed. If the screen is somewhat to medium reddish it may be an adjustment outside of the customer menu.
Let me know what you find--I have seen several of these where the black and white picture was somewhat red--the idea is it should be as close to black and white as possible--if red is the predominant background color the picture will look reddish.
If this has helped and you confirm the red instead of black and white picture--I can tell you a easy way to adjust this.
If this information told you something you did not know and helps you rate this solution as I do this here for free.
ck for dry solder joints if you take rear cover off and just lightly tap on convergence ic heat sink if the tv jumps then you have to remove the board and resolder the joints. also if you have a magnifying glass ck all solder joints on board when it is out
What is the digital television transition? At midnight on February 17, 2009, all full-power television stations in the United States will stop broadcasting in analog and switch to 100% digital broadcasting. Digital broadcasting promises to provide a clearer picture and more programming options and will free up airwaves for use by emergency responders. [Next]
Normally the oily fluid coming from a picture tube, is the coolant from the tube.
It's very combustible and have been known to start a fire.
You have two problems in this set.
A leaking blue picture tube.
A convergence circuit that needs repaired.
Call a local servicer and see if they will give you an estimate over the phone.
It's time to start looking for a new digital set.
Good Luck.
Thanks for the help. I will look for this.
