Tray #1 won't read cd most of the time

Hello
Insert a lens cleanig disc into the device and play it at least three times. If the fault is due to any dirt or dust accumulated on lasser pickup lens, thei will rectify the problem. If this does not help you, the laser pickup lens unit of your device should be replaced with same type and number. The lens cleaning disc can be bought from most of the electronic sparepart shops at your town, and won't cost more. OK.

When I try to listen to the cd's, it won't play them. It tries to acknowledge them but the player won't play them

CD players commonly will not recognize some types of CD, eg MP3 recordings, or maybe CD-RW recordings.

However if this is happening with CDs that would previously play OK, then it could be

- scratched or dirty CD surface
- contaminated laser lens in the player
- laser lens has become misaligned

The last 2 need a service technician, but it may be cheaper to buy a new player.

Hp presario f700/f750us, cd/dvd player, won't boot from start up but is listed first in boot order, not recognized by windows either, won't read, write or play. tray opens and light blinks. tom...

Check the jumper settings in the back of the drive, by the power cable. Make sure your cd/dvd drive is set to SLAVE, with your primary harddrive as MASTER. Check BIOS settings, specifically your boot order, choose which drive you want to load first (usually HD 0), save and exit.
That's just the basics, though.
Another possibility is that you might just have a paperweight ;)
If so, try another drive.
Hope that helps

The player only intermittently recognizes CDs inserted; it does not seem to make any difference whether they are commercial, recorded at home, etc. Sometimes it says "insert disk," sometimes "no disk." ...

A CD tray is usually powered by a rubber strap, the belt can slip through, causing the electronics to miss the input timing, including a microswitch or copper contact which is activated at the closed disc tray so that the laser is focussed to read the table of contents Due to the fact that the spindle motor is activated. And in some players (interchanges there is also a selects witch that can be contaminated. a suggestion to help in the link
