After recording a 8mm tape off my camcorder the dvd when put into a dvd player will not play sound. Picture and everything else is good. Why no sound?
Hi,
I had a similar no audio issue when using the I-Link connector and 8mm camcorder. I found that if i selected "Manual" rather than "Automatic" (copy everything) that I got good audio as well as video.
I have tried using a later model Sony miniDV camcorder with A to D passthrough from my 8mm Sony camcorder that I get better Video color using RCA cables directly from the 8mm Camcorder but better audio from the I-Link passthrough above.
Pogo
Update to my 1/8/08 posting - my recorder is working perfectly! I found the installation of the needed file quite easy and all is good in the hood.

I'm having the same problem---first DVD burned fine with both video and audio...The next 3 look great, but no audio...I'm using the DV cable connection from my Sony camcorder to the DVDirect...
Same problem. Has anybody found a solution?
I have the same problem. I copied Hi8 tape to DVD+R DL disc, picture is fine but no sound. Also, the video was jerky during playback on a Sony DVD player. I am trying the same tape on to a single layer DVD-R with L/R audio cable connected.
Tried the DV connector PLUS the audio connections from my Sony DV Camcorder to the VRD-MC5 and after burning four DVDs I still only intermittent sound on the DVD. Please help!
I did some more investigation.
1. If I connect my Hi8 cam using analog A/V cables, I get audio during playback.
2. If I transfer MiniDV tapes using iLink from my TRV20, everything is fine as well.
3. I captured some video from Hi8 cam using iLink cable to my PC, both audio and video were captured OK. This test was to confirm that the problem is not the camcorder.
4. I called Sony with all my findings. They have a firmware update to fix this problem that is not released yet. They could NOT send the CD to me because I am in Canada. They wanted me give them an address in the US so they could ship the CD there and then those people had to ship it me. Thanks for supporting the Canadian customers. I even asked them to ship it to Sony Canada and then Sony Canada would ship it to me, answer was NO.
They promised me that the new firmware will be posted in a couple of weeks and then I can download it and burn the CD myself.
I am glad after going thru three Sony cams, I have switched to Pani.
Sony now posts a solution to this problem. Fix it by going to www.sony.storagesupport.com and downloading their firmware update.
I just downloaded it and am making a new recording - hopefully this time the audio will come across too.

I checked Sony storage support and the latest firmware they have posted is 19R1. My DVDirect (VRD-MC5) came with this firmware. As mentioned in the change log "Fixes problems with no video during playback although audio is present", my problem is other way around " No audio during playback although video is present" and it only happens during the transfer of 8mm or Hi8 tapes via iLink, transfer of DV tapes is fine. Sony told me that they will be posting a version newer than 19R1. I am patiently waiting and in the meantime I am transferring my DV tapes.
