When fitting any pull start spring, you must first pre wind the spring. Once the spring has been at least 1/2 way wound up or tensioned, wrap the pull rope around the spool. When you assemble it and pull the cord, the spring should wind up further to its fully wound position and now retract as normal. If you don't prewind the spring, there will be little or no tension to rewind the rope.

SOURCE: Homelite Trimmer Pull Start Cord

The part no. for the Spring and container is A98773A. You can Google the PN and find many sources. Expect to pay between $10.00 to $15.00. I like m-and-d.com If they have it in stock you will normally get it in 3 to 4 days.

How do i fix the cord on the lawn mower sk that it makes noise and retacts ?

you have to remove the bottom cover on the mower and remove the cord compartment , its black, then open up the compartment and you may find, like I did, that the little plastic gears in side are broken and the broken parts are what is not letting the spring retract the cord, I fixed mine after removing all broken parts but it only makes the noise 10% of the time, which is not such a bad thing.

Pull start not engaging

It sounds like the pawls are not engaging These are inside the pull cord you will have to replace the pawl springs which can be hard or easy depending on your model. To get at them take off the pull cord cover and remove the whole unit from the motor be careful not to let the spring loose. give the cord a pull and see if the pawls are expanding if not then they will have to be replaced or the springs replaced

Rope needs rewound, got tangled up , had to remove the 4 nuts, now need to get in back on wound tight

I assume that you are speaking of a pull start mechanism.
I can not imagine how to put a put pull starter back on "wound tight". Your pulling on the cord tightens a spring which pulls the cord back in. They go back together with the cord fully wound onto the spool.
Usually, I only take these apart to replace the cord. Wind the new cord onto the spool without handle. Reassemble, then pull out on the cord a little when attaching the handle to the cord. This is the only way to get tension onto the spring at the fully retracted position because the catch for the spring is on the machine and the spring itself is on the underside what you are assembling.
If you do not wish to shorten the cord or replace it, then remove the handle, assemble enough to catch the spring, wind one turn tighter then feed rope through hole and reattach handle. Easier said than done.
If your spring is broken, then you will be needing a new one.

My pull start cord won't retract. How do I fix it

Remove the starter assembly from the engine and pull the cord out--it should have spring resistance to pulling. If nothing, the rewind spring may be broken, or it may have pulled loose from one of the attachment points. Remove the cord from the pull handle and unwind it from the spool if it isn't already pulled out. Remove the spool from the frame to expose the spring--check the ends for breakage and the attachment points for damage (one will be on the under side of the spool). Repair or replace any damaged components and assemble the spring into the attachments. Wind the spool/spring about 2-turns CW, then wedge it to prevent unwinding. Fit the cord back into the spool and wind it CW until the cord has about 8" or so to feed out through the cord port. Fit the cord end back into the handle, tie an overhand knot, and push the knot into the handle bore. Remove the spool wedge and try pulling the cord several times to make sure it goes out and back smoothly. Return the starter to the engine and attempt starting. Hope this helps!

Pull cord broke on my craftsman gas push edger. I replaced cord but when I pull cord..It wont rewind but I can hear it trying to start

It sounds like you did not properly rewind the spring that is behind the spool that the cord would around, that spring is what rewinds the cord after pulling the cord.

I am trying to replace the cord on my mower, but the cord wont spring back in when I attempt to start it. Please help

the spring below the cord 'spool' must be wound tight before new cord is attached.disconnect cord, wind spool in the direction cord would pull it when starting until it stops & hold it there[spring is wound] release it enough to align & attach cord.release spool & allow it to wind cord onto spool.replace cover.

Spring replacement

Replacing the spring on this tiller can be tough. You have to get the tension spring set into the stop and partially wind the tension (by turning the cord pulley) and THEN attach the cord before completing winding the tension spring. It took me about an hour to figure out how much preset of tension was needed before I was able to get it to work. You have to partially preset tension because starting from zero will not fully rewind the cord.
