Look at the shaft seals on the output shaft where the tines are attached. If it's wet then the oil came from the gear box.

The simple way is to take a oil pan and lift the tiller with the plug removed and drain it out while holding over the pan. Dispose of oil properly. I have an older model that does not have an oil drain plug.

Check your sump nut, oil pressure switch, oil filter .are they secure .another clue is look for oil marks around the engine bay.
