Johnson and Evinrude carbureted 2-stroke outboards since 1964 require a 50:1 fuel to oil mixture (2%) on engines without an automatic oiling system - 6 gallons of gas to 1 pint of outboard oil.

1985 40 hp Johnson outboard wouldnt open up and

sounds like your mix is off and it's fowling the plugs. probably too rich. make sure the level in your carb bowls isn't too high. Really sounds like you should clean and bench set your carbs. Especially if a plug change helps but doesn't last, then it's got to be your fuel mix, or maybe timing.

the older ones are dependable but they all exspecly being that old its better to be safe than sorry its if it were mine i would mix the gas thats what i tell all my coust the 90 thr 1999 omc vro were terrible the fill the carbs full of oil so i would just mix it that way u know its right just use good oil and that engine will last a very long time good luck

Hi. Just a quick one: I just bought a 1996 Johnson J35QLED. Do I have to mix oil & gas?

Is there a place under the cowling to put outboard motor oil if not mix 50 to 1 to be safe if will not hurt the motor to add oil to the gas,but if you dont you will burn up the motor. Jim OMC REtired Mech
