Try recovering the password to your old email account. There should be a "Need help?" or "Can't access your account?" or some similar link on the sign-in page.

Facebook now appears to acknowledge this is a real problem. If you have two email addresses that you registered with FB, then you can use the other to reset.
More likely, you only used one and so you'll need to submit a problem report to them for resolution: http://www.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=invalid_email_error

When you're logging in, there should be an option that says something like 'can't remember your password?'. Choose that option and one of your email addresses. If the email address is on file, you will get your password sent to you via your email account. Otherwise, Facebook will tell you right away if the email address that you typed in is actually on file. Unfortunately, it's a process of elimination and hopefully, you don't have too many accounts to go through.

Tell your friends who were in the friends list of your old facebook account to look at your profile info for email id. That would be your login mail id. Enter that mail id in 'Forgot password' link and get confirmation code. Paste that as per mail instructions and get new password. Login with that password and mail id you received from friends and enjoy your facebook.
