Have been using my Breville Cafe Roma about 3 months with nil problems and great coffee until today. Now, although machine heats up, it will not produce steam through the steam wand, only a steady stream of hot water.
The steam wand has to be removed to be cleaned properly. Unfortunately, this procedure is not outlined in the manual. Just cleaning the wand on the outside or using a clip to clean the tip is not enough.
The other end of steam wand where it connects to the pressuring cabin actually swivels around a fitting. It is this fitting that you need to thoroughly clean. Years of using the machine can cause calcification around this fitting.
If you look under this end of hte steam wand, you should see a philllip-headed screw. Before you loosen this screw, you have to remove the grey trim so that the entire wand can be remove.
Once the entire wand is removed, what I just described will be much clearer.
My machine did exactly the same at some point and it finally completly stopped heating. The problem was not in the steam wand because it was not clugged and was very clean. The problem was that a connector connected to the heater was almost completly burned and the heater had not enough power to make steam. Eventually, the contact completly burned. See this post for instructions on how to open the machine and check for the connector. Espresso Machine Stopped Working
My steam wand did the exact same thing. It started just spraying out a steady stream of water but was not heating up. I tried using vinegar but that didn't work. Then I used the cleaning solution CLR-calcium, lime, rust (8 parts water, 1 part CLR) and let it run through the steam wand for awhile. At first it just kept streaming out water as usual then all of a sudden it stopped doing anything. I still kept it on just to see if anything would happen. After about 10 seconds all of a sudden the steam wand shot out whatever had clogged it! It works perfectly again! Just make sure you're standing away from the machine. I was lucky that I didn't get the solution in my eyes. It was a pretty powerful declogging. No more stream of water coming out. I had only used the machine about 10 times before this happened. I had not been cleaning it well after each use back then. Now I definitely do. I will probably do this type of cleaning once a month. Try it! It worked for me!
Hi,
Make sure the steam pipe is clean.

Same problem here, except this problem has always existed. Water comes out for a while, then a little steam is produced. I would love to find out what the fix is for this.
hi there,
I too am having a similar problem with my breville espresso machine. Whereby i used to be able to froth the milk with no problems but these past couple of days, the steam button light is illuminated, when i turn the knob to steam the milk, the steam button's light goes off and the hot water gets illumintaed and all i get is hot water. It also does not make that thumping noise it usually does just before the steaming begins. Please help!
I have tried clenaing it, letting the hot water run for a few minutes (not just seconds) but still the issue isn't resolved. I am thinking about taking it back to the manufacturer as it is still under warranty. Only prob is they are on the other side of the state :o(
Many thanks,
Alison
We have the same problem... no steam just a stream of hot water. So far have been unable to fix it.
