I have a Dobbie Bros Pty Ltd (MELBOURNE-SYDNEY-ADELAIDE) compass circa WW2(?) that has two levels inside, a mirror in the lid and the E & W back to front. What was is used for and how do we use it?

you could always try unplugging the battery for about ten minutes to see if that resets it. make sure you have the code for the stereo first if it requires one.

Check the connector that plugs into the back of the mirror and make sure it is pushed in all the way. If that is not it, look carefully at the wires going into the connector. I had one that broke off. I had to pull the pin out of the connector and re crimp it onto the wire.
SOURCE: how do you remove and
Remove the negative battery cable from the battery. Unclip the wire cover from the mirror and then pull it off the wire. Remove the 7-pin wire connector from the rear of the mirror. Grip the mirror and mirror base and rotate it through 90 degrees.(the mirror will now point toward the door) Slide the mirror and base toward the dash to remove its from the mount.
To replace, hold the mirror at 90 degrees(pointing to the door), slide the mirror back onto the base and rotate to its correct position. Reconnect the 7-pin connector. Refit the cover (snap it over the wire) then snap the cover into place on the mirror, feed the wire into the cover and push the end of the cover under the headlining. Move the mirror around to see that the cover is secure. If not then you dont have enough slack on the wire.
Refit the battery connection. Switch the ignition to "on" and check the indicator on the left side of the mirror. It should be lit. If not press the button on the far left of the mirror. Cover the sensor on the rear of the mirror and see that it darkens.

Should b a wire go in into mirror if it can do that..normally routes straight to headliner ...maybe mirror is malfunctioning also
