01 740i turns over but does not start. Sometimes it starts right up and sometimes it uurns over and dies not right away. eventusally it always starts after multiple times.

check for spark the spark could be weak

no its more than likely not related to the trans,if you are having shift problems though,i would have the tps(throttle position sensor) checked out.another thing to check is the vacume lines to and from the egr valve and the valve its self for proper operation.

It may be the crankshaft position sensor or the camshaft position sensor.

Had this happen with a Honda Accord: carb icing.
You do not have a carb.
Had this happen with a newer Honda, bad ignition switch. It was intermittent. $24 and one hour fixed it.

i advise checking the fuel sysytems starting with the filter

try the transmision you may have to replace it

sounds like your crank sensor

If the car starts and dies right away you may have a pass key sensor fault.
Try to start the car,if the car dies right away just leave the key on and watch the security light in the insturment panel,if it begins to blink leave the key on until it stops blinking (apx 10 mins.) this will reprogram the pass lock to the pcm and may solve all your problems.if the car continues to die after running a min or so then you may have other faults,or if the car dies right after start the pass lock sensor may need to be replaced.

check the housing onder the manifold and the converter they might be clugged up and keeping it from starting right away.
