It could be both.

If you set your TV to Auto, then it will try to 'best guess' the correct picture shape based on what's displayed on screen. That's okay in the lab, but in the real world where there's too much changing then it's not so good.

The other thing could be the box and the TV channel you happen to be watching. If you have the box's aspect ratio set wrong i.e. to a different picture shape to the TV, then it will squash or stretch pictures.

Set your box to match the TV shape. The two main choices are Widescreen (16:9) or the old picture shape 4:3

Set your TV on a fixed aspect ratio: Either Widescreen if it is a 16:9 set, or Normal if it is a 4:3 set.

SOURCE: Westinghouse ltv 32w4 hdc 32.02 in. hdtv lcd tv / dvd combo

My 42" Westinghouse HDMI inputs just stopped working. I thought it was the TW Explorer 4250HDC issue so I got a new one from TW. Still said no signal from HDMI. So, I shut the TV down and pulled the power cord out of the back. I waited a few seconds and reconnected the pwr cord. The TV "re-booted" so to say and now the HDMI inputs work. I think TVTEK has the right idea that it is firmware/software related. In the mean time, you might want to give that a try.

SOURCE: Aspect ratio problems on Samsung LN-S2651D Flat Panel TV

The aspect ratio (zoom) button on the cable remote had been changed. On Brighthouse the # button toggles through the zoom settings. It's not a tv issue, it's a cable fix.

SOURCE: LG 32'' LCD TV aspect ratio self switching

I have an LG LCD TV with the same problem.
The solution is to go to
MENU
OPTIONS
FACTORY RESET
And select HOME rather than STORE on initial setup.
Mine was set to store as it was a display model.
That means that whatever picture setting you make they will reset after 10 minutes.

SOURCE: edges of picture being cut off LG 37LG30 LCD TV

Yes, it is possible the settings from your cable box maybe set to the wrong ratio eg:letterbox. Depending on what type of box you have, look in the cable box menu for a settings option, then change the aspect ratio to a different format.

Cannot change aspect ratio of picture when ratio button is pressed on remote. Batteries in remote are good. Everything else on remote works. Sony KP-57HW40

If you are connected to a HD cable or satellite box, the aspect ratio is set by that box. If it is set for 1080i 16:9 wide screen mode then your TV is locked at that ratio. This is good considering you have a Hi-Scan 1080i television in the Sony KP57HW40. Please take a moment to rate my answer. Thanks...

Picture is to tall. it cuts off the top of the heads

It sounds like you have the image on the perspective. If you tv is 4:3 aspect ration the video source (cable box, dvd ) must be set for a 4:3. If you have a 16:9 ratio (widescreen) the soutrce should be set to 16:9..................Nevermind, Just looked it up you this TV is 4:3.

Your TV remote will have a button to toggle/change the aspect ratios of the TV. Button could be called picture/aspect/image etc. If you have an HD cable box you need to go into the video setting and chnage the aspect ratio to match the 4:3 tv.

If you need more help, please respond with more deatils.

Ilo tv

You need to change the aspect ratio of the screen. The cable box remote has an aspect ratio button and the tv remote also has an aspect ratio button or picture size button. You are probably on a zoom aspect since its too big.

I cannot change aspect ratio

If you are trying to change the aspect ratio on the television make sure you are sending an HD signal Via Component cables. I am not aware of a way to get HD cable without a PC cable card or box, it could be that your television is not receiving the proper signal (analog, or composite) to switch the aspect ratio on your particular television.

Aspect Ratio not responding/always in "Full" mode

Normally, when I see this problem in the customer's home, I find the main culprit to be the cable box. The remote for the cable box may have a button on it to change the format or picture size. You may have to go into the menu of the cable box to change the format setting. Hope this helps.
