Daewoo side by side fridge freezer FRS-U201CW-N186. Freezer is not self defrosting and fridge isn't maintaining a cold temperature

Daewoo Side by side fridge freezer FRS-U201CW-N186. Freezer is not self defrosting and fridge isn't maintaining a cold temperature Hi The freezer does freeze - however is freezing up. The outside of the freezer is staying cold. There are also loud cracking/banging noises coming from it occasionally. The fridge seems to be barely working, if at all. Would like to repair i myself - not sure what to look for or where to start. Cheers

Start with locating and cycling the defrost timer switch, generally found in the refrigerator side. The timer controls a heating element designed to melt off ice build up on the interior freezer coils. if the timer is bad, ice will build up, blocking air flow to the refrigerator section (making it not cool) and eventually build up enough so that the internal fan actually hits ice, making unusual noises. most timers can be manually driven with a flat head screwdriver, do it with the power connected, when you reach the defrost cycle you will hear the fans and compressor shut off, and you should be able to feel warmth on the back panel in the freezer after a few minutes.

if you find the timer isn't working properly, it is not difficult to replace, take your time, take pictures as you go along so reassembly is easier, and of course have the frige unplugged when you do it.

got the cover off with out breaking! Is 2 wires going into a sealed white 'capsule shaped' thing.

I might suggest obtaining an exploded parts diagram from Daewoo for your model. the part you are describing does NOT sound like a typical defrost timer. They are generally accessible without any disassembly on the refrigerator side, and typically have 4 or more wires.

two supplyling power to the timer, and two more to supply power to the heating element in the freezer coil compartment.

You have a defrost system problem. Defrost is controlled by a timer which energizes the heater circuit. The heater circuit has a radiant or cal rod type heater which melts the frost from the coil. When the coil reaches a temperature where all ice would be gone a termination switch opens and shuts of the heater. The timer will continue to run until defrost time expires (18-22 minutes).

If you can locate the timer there is a clutch head screw to advance the timer to the defrost position. Turn the screw clockwise SLOWLY until you hear one audible click. The heaters should come on and defrost take place. If the unit restarts after the 18-22 minute period the timer is good, if it does not restart advance the screw to a second audible click and it will restart.
If you had to turn the timer the to second click to get it started cooling replace the timer.

If the unit restarted after the 18-22 minutes and defrost did not happen your problem is in the heater circuit. This would be an open heater or bad defrost terminator switch. To access the heater and defrost terminator the back panel in the freezer section must be removed. With an Ohm meter you can check the heater to see if it is good.

SOURCE: Frigidaire side by side freezer - LOUD noise...

It sounds like the evaporator fan is hitting ice that is built up on the evaporator coil. When it's making the noise, open the freezer door and see if it stops.
(Most models are wired so that the evaporator fan cuts off when the freezer door is open.)
Check the inside back, lower panel of the freezer for ice built up or frost on it. If there is, you have a defrost problem that is most likley a bad heater. It's located around the coil inside the freezer behind the panel you will be looking at. The defrost problem would explain the freezer not freezing ice cream.

IF the evaporator coil is icing then you wont have any air flow through it to cool the refrigerator. Check the unit for a defrost timer. New solid state units don't have it though, it is built into the main board. You should also check to see if there is a defrost coil in evaporator. IT might be burned out. Since you did not post the make and model, it is hard to say.

You will need to check the=> 67003410 Damper Control If it is not working properly or blocked by ice from the freezer no mater what setting you choose it is going to get too cold or if closed too hot. Here is a link to how to test the auto damper=> HERE Not sure what the banging is caused by unless the fans are hitting their housings or ice formed around or near the fan blades, Can you tell me where the banging is coming from like freezer or below the refrigerator in the compressor area? My car was off for 14 hours; I was standing beside it in the garage and a loud bang sound came from under the hood. I popped the hood and cannot see anything wrong. Am litle afraid to start it!! What

Is your car well protected with antifreeze? If not, maybe a freeze plug came out. Living in Montana, cars stay outside all winter. I always use a 50-50 solution of antifreeze. Never had coolant freeze up.
Before cranking the car, check that your timing belt did not pop. Don't know how it could, sitting there 14 hours, but turn crank slowly by hand, and check that camshaft is also turning.

Loud clanging noise from Kenmore upright freezer

Check the condenser fan (outside at the rear) and check the coil isn't baking hot. Electronics or board wouldn't cause your symptoms. Check the simple things first!

Had a loud noise coming from the freezer, water all over inside.

Hi, what sounds to me what happened, is the evaporator fan motor prop (blade) has hit a patch of ice that had built up and temporally caused the unit to stop and warm up. I have seen this happen on commercial units to where after the unit has went through its defrost cycle as you will have on this system, not all of the ice was melted away and the fans stopped due to ice build up. When the defrost cycle happened, this caused the water at the top back and after the fan began to run again all is freezing and back to normal. When a evaporator fan stops during the regular cooling cycle, the freezer section will start to over freeze very badly due to no air flow across this coil. I would keep an eye on it as you may be loosing this motor. It is called the evaporator fan motor, 120 volts/a/c, 60hz. small sealed, single phase. R.P.M.s and H. P. should be noted on a data plate on the unit maybe inside, you will need to look. In any case, keep a close eye on it for now if it is working correctly. You may not have this problem again. If it does happen you can contact me and we can go into more detail to solve the problem.
Sincerely,
Shastalaker7

My freezer compartment is making a loud vibrating noise. The ice maker is not working, the water freezes on the inlet ramp to the cube maker. What gives?

The vibration is usually an unballance, check the freezer fan blade for any broken pieces. The water freeze will cause the Ice maker to not work..if the fill valve for the ice maker leaks, even a small bit it will freeze up on that "inlet ramp" if so, replace the fill valve. Else, I've found a unit not used, left alone for a week or more.. that tube still freezes up...gets too cold?
