Question about Refrigerators
Daewoo Side by side fridge freezer FRS-U201CW-N186. Freezer is not self defrosting and fridge isn't maintaining a cold temperature Hi The freezer does freeze - however is freezing up. The outside of the freezer is staying cold. There are also loud cracking/banging noises coming from it occasionally. The fridge seems to be barely working, if at all. Would like to repair i myself - not sure what to look for or where to start. Cheers
Start with locating and cycling the defrost timer switch, generally found in the refrigerator side. The timer controls a heating element designed to melt off ice build up on the interior freezer coils. if the timer is bad, ice will build up, blocking air flow to the refrigerator section (making it not cool) and eventually build up enough so that the internal fan actually hits ice, making unusual noises. most timers can be manually driven with a flat head screwdriver, do it with the power connected, when you reach the defrost cycle you will hear the fans and compressor shut off, and you should be able to feel warmth on the back panel in the freezer after a few minutes.
if you find the timer isn't working properly, it is not difficult to replace, take your time, take pictures as you go along so reassembly is easier, and of course have the frige unplugged when you do it.

Testimonial: "Thanks so much - this seems to be the exact problem. There is a switch on the interior wall of the freezer - it has a plastic cover over it so can't get screwdriver in there - just looking for a diagram of how to get it apart with out breaking."

You have a defrost system problem. Defrost is controlled by a timer which energizes the heater circuit. The heater circuit has a radiant or cal rod type heater which melts the frost from the coil. When the coil reaches a temperature where all ice would be gone a termination switch opens and shuts of the heater. The timer will continue to run until defrost time expires (18-22 minutes).
If you can locate the timer there is a clutch head screw to advance the timer to the defrost position. Turn the screw clockwise SLOWLY until you hear one audible click. The heaters should come on and defrost take place. If the unit restarts after the 18-22 minute period the timer is good, if it does not restart advance the screw to a second audible click and it will restart.
If you had to turn the timer the to second click to get it started cooling replace the timer.
If the unit restarted after the 18-22 minutes and defrost did not happen your problem is in the heater circuit. This would be an open heater or bad defrost terminator switch. To access the heater and defrost terminator the back panel in the freezer section must be removed. With an Ohm meter you can check the heater to see if it is good.

It sounds like the evaporator fan is hitting ice that is built up on the evaporator coil. When it's making the noise, open the freezer door and see if it stops.
(Most models are wired so that the evaporator fan cuts off when the freezer door is open.)
Check the inside back, lower panel of the freezer for ice built up or frost on it. If there is, you have a defrost problem that is most likley a bad heater. It's located around the coil inside the freezer behind the panel you will be looking at. The defrost problem would explain the freezer not freezing ice cream.
