Are you sure you have the right model #? Your refrigerator's model number may vary by type. The model number of a top freezer refrigerator can be seen along the upper left side wall of the fresh food compartment and is visible when the door is opened. The model number of a french door and side-by-side refrigerator can be seen along the upper right side of the fresh food compartment and is visible when the door is opened. Ours did the same thing and we returned it for an exact same model. Happy to report that the second one works just fine. Don't waste any more time on this defective one!

SOURCE: Frigidaire model ftr18b freezer works, fridge is only cool

Info relating specifically to the Frigidaire FRT18B5ABB:

1.Refrigerator unplugged remove the bottom back panel. (Access cover with label. The rectangular shaped panel on the back, at the bottom) Place the screws in a container.
Also remove the Kickplate Grille in the front, and the defrost pan.

2.Use the wand tip on your vacuum cleaner, and vacuum this area out. Pay special attention to the condenser coils, and the fan. Use care as you don't want to bend the fan blades. After you have vacuumed up as much as possible, see if your vacuum has where you can attach the hose to blow air through it. An air compressor, hose, and air nozzle would be REAL handy right now! Blow the condenser coils, and all areas clean of any gunk. (Hair, spider webs, etc.) If this is not feasible for you, you'll need some sort of long, thin, dust 'bunny', and have to dislodge this 'gunk' physically. Then vacuum.

3.BE SURE to replace the bottom back panel, (Access Cover)! It is a VERY necessary item! If your fridge doesn't have one at present, make a temporary one of cardboard, and tape it on. This access cover is needed.

If your refrigerator side is only cool, and your freezer is cold, you may have a problem with the Cold Control, (Temperature Control), or the Defrost Timer. (Timer-Defrost)

If it's truly brand new, don't mess with trying to fix it. It should still be under warranty. Get a replacement. There's no telling whats wrong and you're better off getting another new one anyway. Even if it is inconvenient.

If the front display panel reads OF OF it is in the demo mode. To release it from demo mode do the following: Simultaneously press and hold the Energy Saver and the Power Freeze buttons for about 1-2 seconds then release. You should then hear a chime sound. Check to see if the unit is running. If so it could take several hours to become cool enough t use.
If the above does not apply (i.e not in demo mode), unplug the refrigerator then plug it back in and try depressing and holding the same two buttons for 10 seconds before releasing.

Thank you for your post, friend!

In order to take your Frigidaire refrigerator out demo mode you would need to push and hold the "up arrow" on your freezer and the "down arrow" on your refrigerator for five seconds. Once your appliance has went into demo mode both the refrigerator and freezer display should read 77. If you could follow up with a post I would greatly appreciate it. -Matt

How do I turn off demo mode on my frigidaire refrigerator model# FRT18B5JW?

Hello friend, thank you for your inquiry!

I understand that your Frigidaire refrigerator has been plugged in for 24 hours and is still not cooling. I would recommend you adjust the setting to a colder setting to see if that would jump start the compressor. I have reviewed your appliance and I was unable to locate a demo mode for your appliance. You can also attempt to perform a reset which is unplugging the appliance for roughly ten minutes and then plugging it in. I hope this is helpful. -Matt

Hello Amelia;

My Name is peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

You have a brand new unit off the floor. You do not have component failure problems.

You purchased a floor model. Floor models are set in the; "Demo Mode". In this mode your unit will not cool. Taking a unit out of the demo mode depends on the model. You need to contact your place of purchase to determine what buttons you need to press to get the unit out of the demo mode.

The people who deliver the units for Sears are contractors. Physical contract laborers. Most can not speak English.

I should know, I am a former Sears Home Service refrigeration/ A&E factory Service technician; all under the same umbrella. I have heard all the complaints about Sears deliveries.

Brand new fridgidaire gallery and has been plugged in two hours, is still room temperature. Why isn't it cooling?

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly with over 40 years of in home Appliance experience.
Without your model number this is a generic rsponse. Look at the installation instructions that came with your unit. Make sure EACH piece of packing material has been removed. The unit should be warm to the touch around the door gaskets at eye level. If it is NOT warm this may have been a floor unit that is in the DEMO mode. Call the service number in your information manuals and ask how to remove the unit from the DEMO mode. Some units depending upon model have a Sabbath setting where the unit is OFF for 1 day a week. Check your intruction manuals to see if this applies to your unit on how to cycle the Sabbath setting off. When running properly the Compressor, evaporator fan and condenser fan in the bottom of the unit should all be running.

If none of the above resolve the issue unfortunately there is little else you can do without voiding your warranty. You must schedule warranty reapir service or..... Work with the retailer to have the unit swapped out. I think this is something simple like the unit is stuck in the DEMO mode or there is packing tape on the condensor fan blades in the bottom of the unit. Thee are other possibilites but all are warranty related. I hate to pass this off as call for service if you can not resolve theproblem but that is what your faced with.

From the generic user guide:
Turning the Cooling system on and off
You can disable the cooling system in your refrigerator by pressing the On/Off button located on the left side of the temperature control panel. To ensure that you do not accidentally turn off the cooling system, the button does not work unless you press and hold it for three seconds. Once you disable the cooling system, all refrigeration to the freezer and fresh food compartments stops. To turn the cooling system back on, you must again press and hold the On/Off button for three more seconds.

I am including the FF23 - 26 user /operating / intall guide link here:

If the link does not work try this one:

If you respond with your model number AFTER you make the customer care call I will see what I can dig up to help you get it started.

Cannot get the fridge to start cooling

If the panel temperature reads 0 F 0 F it is in the "DEMO" mode. This is normal if you purchase a floor model. To bring it back to normal mode press ENERGY SAVER & ADJUST FREEZER together for 3 to 5 seconds until it beeps. Then unplug the referidgerator for at least 30 seconds. Then plug it bck in. That will reset the stupid computer and get it back to normal operation.
