This sounds like a failed update. Restart the computer and hit either F2 or F8 or possibly Tab or Delete once the splash screen comes up. This should give you a windows startup option for safe mode. Click Safe Mode with Networking and let the computer startup. This will bypass all current startup items and possible problematic services. Login and start up Task Manager. View startup items and look to see if anything is starting up that says "Windows Update" or if anything else stands out that shouldn't be there. Names that are random garbled letters, etc. Disable these for normal startup. Now click on control panel under start menu and go to windows update and see if any updates failed to install. If they did, disable install automatically in windows update.
After this go to "run" and type in msconfig. Click normal startup, hit apply, when the message that says "restart computer" pops up click yes and let it restart the computer normally.

I'm not sure this is pertinent, but examine this article and see. Also similar post here, search links here, and FAQ link here.
I'd suggest you post in one of the MS forums, either here or here.or at this link, and you'll be asking in the midst of more vista experts.
Have you gone to the event viewer to see what kind of errors may be logged in connection with this behavior? See here, here, here.
I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!
SOURCE: WHEN I TRY TO LOG IN MY VISTA ITS SHOWING INVALID
ARE YOU USING THE ADMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT OR STANDARD USER ACCOUNT TO LOGIN.
If the account that you are trying to login is a standard user account, unfortunately you will need the correct user name and password and try keying in your credential's without the cap's lock on and ensure the NUM lock is not on..If not required.
And when you installed the Vista operating system, you should have created an administrator account see If you could use that account to login and change the user account password which you are not able to logon.

Hello,
You will need to repair your operating system. Please insert Vista installation disk and then restart your system. Choose the repair option.
Login With the Administrator Account in Windows XP Professional
Click
the "Start" menu and then click "Log Off."
Click
"Switch User" when the prompt screen opens.
Press
"Ctrl," "Alt" and "Delete."
Click
on "Administrator" when the "Log on to Windows" screen pops
up. Type in the administrator password, if applicable.
Click
"OK." You will now be logged in as the administrator.
Log On as An Administrator in Windows Vista
Start your computer and
allow it to continue through its startup process. By default your computer will
simply load directly to the primary user account (usually the administrator
account), but if there are multiple users on the system it will load to the
account login screen. Use the mouse to
click on the administrator account from the list of available accounts to log
on. This step is only necessary if you've customized Windows Vista with more
than one account or you have set the operating system to load the login screen
first. Enter the password
required in the password field to log on to the administrator account. Click the
"OK" or "Log On" button once you have entered the password.
This button may be labeled differently depending on the version of Windows Vista
or any GUI (graphical user interface) changes you may have made.
Log on as an administrator from within the Windows
Vista environment by clicking on "Start" and then "Log
Off." As soon as you have logged off, you will be returned to the login
screen where you can choose the administrator account from the available list.
