New cartridges are in but printer doesn't want to print on left side of paper-very lightly-rest of page is fine.

Have you checked that you are sending the print job using the correct paper tray on the printer? Check the properties of the printer to ensure you are. Check also that the printer is OK by running a test print from the printer and not through the PC. If I remember it's hold the green button for around 7-10 seconds, whilst powering on.

Check your Toner Carts.
Is the line a certain color?
Black perhaps?
Lift the door of the toner cart.
If you see a streak on your toner drum, you will see a streak on your paperwork.
Look at your fuser as well.
Is there a problem with the big orange roller?
BEWARE! Don't touch the fuser roller its EXTREMELY HOT!
Let the printer cool down before inspecting.

I fixed this problem by disconnecting the power cord from the power-strip and connecting it directly into the wall. My printer was not getting enough voltage from the power-strip. I hope this helps.

Fuser sleeve is contaminated and needs replacing - cheaper to replace the printer.
