Monitor is in standby and there is no power on pc.The pc is ten years old and it is a dell xps gen 3. I replaced the cmos battery and rest it but I am not sure it took effect because the system will not turn on. Do you think I should replace the power supply first?
I know this post is over a year old, but i feel like chiming in anyway. The motherboard may have suffered from cheap cap syndrome. This happens when the components used to populate the motherboard were poorly made with inferior products. The capacitor's may have swelled up to the point of uselessness. This would give you post errors, or no post, or even no power. This is not to rule out the power supply, but it is more likely the motherboard.
To test the power supply, unplug the big 20+ pin plug from the power supply to the motherboard, and use a conductor such as a paperclip to connect the one and only green wire in the mix to any black wire (there is a black wire on either side of the green one, you can use both)
If the power supply is still good, the fans and drives will come on and spin up when you make this jump with the paperclip.
If for some reason you notice the fans twitching but not spinning, then you know the power supply IS bad!

Buy a generic case that will accept the power supply you need. Of course you will need to transfer everything from the old case to the new case.

Thanks for usnig Fixya.com.
Most computer power supplys have 3 different voltages coming out of them The motherboard light indicates only that the particular part of the motherboard that uses a particular voltage. The power supply may only be providiing power to that specific part of the computer. I would recommend trying another power supply to determine if that is the resolution.
Please let us know if this solves your problem.

Hi Anonymous, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. Did it power up before you replaced the battery? Does anything happen at all when you press the power button? Any beeps or do you hear the fan running?
Im almost a 100% positive that the issue is with the power supply the cmos battery just provides enough power to save bios settings and dates and times ect. The older Dell desktops are known to have power supply failures you should be able to replace the power supply on that for no more than $50 and everything should turn on/boot up again.
