Why won't my compressor start?

I just bought a new (craftsman 125 psi air compressor 1 hp 3 gallon) and when I got it home all it will do is hum every three seconds or so? It had NO oil in it as it was leaking from a long black cap. I got it stopped but could the pump be defective? It's also missing an air intake. Do I need to rebuild it? HELP!

If it's new I would return it. However that model number 16638 is for a Huffy Bicycle.

SOURCE: I have a 1.5 hp 3 gallon craftsman air compressor.

hi mate it is probably due to too much oil and when it starts the oil inside is splashed out the oil cap i reccomend start the compressor and let it run for 2 mins to get the oil warm take the plug out and drain the oil and the refill with p68 oil and on the oil sight glass refill it untill it reaches the red dot in the middle if it has one or on the dip stick it has a measurement good luck

SOURCE: compressor shuts off before reaching max pressure

Yes,but if the max is 125 you don't want to increase it above 110 and set off the pressure relief valve.

SOURCE: craftsman 3 gal air compressor - no air presssure

Check the head gasket. Mine just did the same thing. Mine was blown between the two chambers on top. It's very thin right there. I went to the auto parts store and bought some gasket and made my own for about $6. It's up a working great...finally. BTW the gasket kit is on back order right now at Sear's parts website. It appears we aren't the only ones with the problem!

I have a Craftsman 125 psi 1.5 hp 3 gallon air compressor. When I plug it in and turn on I see a blue arc come from somewhere. How do I fix this?

If the blue arc is coming from the motor it might be an older motor that uses brushes. If the motor is serviceable you would need to take apart the motor and change the brushes. Blue arcs don't usually come from shorts

Why is my compressor humming every three seconds or so?utive?

sounds like the motor is seized, disconnect power then open the rear cover and use a wrench to free the motor. If the motor spins freely you may have a faulty motor starting capacitor

Air compressor cannot spin up with pressure in tank sometimes

There is an unloader valve and a check valve on the discharge side of the pump. The check valve is not holding and the unloader is not dumping the pressure so the compressor cannot start. Since it is new, you may want to take it back. If not you are going to be replacing parts.

My craftsman air compressor #919176820 2 HP 12 gallon 200 max psi will not compress over 125 psi

If your compressor is oil-less type, most likely pressure is leaking past piston ring. To verify, remove cover to expose bottom of cylinder (unplug compressor and let out all air). With flashlight, examine the upper-most part of the cylinder (turn motor by hand till piston is at top of stroke). If top of cylinder is scratched, then pressure is leaking past.
For many years now, stores are in a race to have more HP and PSI to attract customers. Customer is really the loser because components used to make the units can not handle the higher pressure. Normally small 115v compressors are set to cut out at 125psi and larger two stage units will cut out at 160psi. Small compressor set to 200psi makes for short lived compressor. Could be compared to driving your car at 100mph all day every day. Longest life is attained when unit is being used at about 60 to 75 % of capacity.
To allow your compressor to reach cutout pressure and keep working for a while, lower cutout to 120psi (pressure switch may be adjustable). To restore to 200psi, replace cylinder/ ring.
If your compressor is oil type, suspect leaking reed valves.

Power on are compressor, hear buzz, but pump did not start .

if its just humming and not starting you may have a motor start capacitor on the motor thats bad and can't supply the starting voltage against the compressor
