SOURCE: 6 yr old mower starts, won't run

sounds like a plugged high speed jet in carb - you can attempt to prime again , push at least 7-8 times - once it fires continue to push primer to keep running - it may clear out the carb if this doesnt work the carb will need to be removed and cleaned

SOURCE: I HAVE A MTD YARD MACHINE 12A446B729. RUNS FIVE

was having the exact same problem with my 6.5 hp Toro lawnmower with a Tecumseh engine. The engine would start up okay but after a few minutes of mowing, the mower would start missing and eventually shut down. I would pull and pull and pull on the starter rope, getting angry and frustrated and eventually going back in the house to let it cool down.

I looked up all kinds of information and I finally decided it was a bad coil (something about the resistance being low when the mower wasn't hot and then when it heated up the coil would conduct enough electricity to somehow make the engine shut down.)

I called a local shop and wanted to get an estimate on replacing the coil. I have no clue about engines so I dared not get into the guts of the mower myself. He told me to check the gas cap. HUH??????

He told me to make sure there wasn't a part missing out of it. I thought, what the heck would a gas cap have to do with the engine shutting down. Well, apparently there is a mechanism on these caps that prevents a vacuum from pulling on the fuel system and my gas cap indeed had a part missing. To verify this, I cut the grass for about 5 minutes. When it started to run rough, I took the gas cap off to allow pressure to escape from the gas tank and voila! it started to purr like a kitten.

So, I'm only out $4 for a new gas cap and I'm as good as new. Man I wish I was more mechanically inclined so I hope your problem is as easy to solve as this one.

Hope this helps!

SOURCE: Yard Machines - Won't shift into gear

The problem most likely is the shaft on which the interlock slides back and forth on inside the transmission. The yardmachines have a continous spinning shaft which ends in a bevel gear. The is an interlock plate which is connected to the Forward Reverse shift lever, this plate slides back and forth and either engages the forward gear or the backward gear. This shaft is most likely galled up, preventing everything from sliding the way it needs to. This is not a difficult thing to fix if you are somewhat mechanical. Disassemble the transmission and check if everything slides

How do you control how fast or slow a grandfather clock runs ? Does lowering the pendelum disc make it faster or slower ? Thank you !!!

The longer the pendulum the slower it will swing, so lowering it will slow the clock down.

My 3 year old Yard Machine 139cc started (choke out), but then began running excessively fast after pushing the choke back in. A few weeks later, it still started (choke out) but now ran very fast even...

Check the carburetor see if all the bolts are tight.check the cylinder head gasket take off plug wire make sure it is away from plug so it wont start. Pull start rope can you hear air being pulled into the engine? if so the head gasket has ruptured or head bolts came lose. Ensure all parts are tight. Ensure fuel lines are not clogged. Check fuel level.

My 22" MTD Yardman push mower runs too slow to cut much grass. How can I adjust it to run faster? It has no speed selection that I know of, only the handle bar that must be held tight to keep it running....

These inexpensive mowers are not made for large scale mowing. They're set to run as fast as they do and have low compression (read that as low power also) to make them easy to start and operate. About the only thing you can do to make it work better is keep the air cleaner clean, use fresh gas and keep the blade sharp so it cuts the grass easier. Mowing more often also means less cuttings under the deck so it works more efficently.

YARD MACHINE MOWER NOT A YEAR OLD YET AND IT CRUDDIES UP EACH NEW SPARK PLUG AND SMOKES, NOT RUNNING WELL. ITS RUNS REAL FAST AND THEN REAL SLOW, SPUTTERS. I HAVE ALWAYS KEPT AIR FILTER CLEAN AND OIL...

Return the mower if possible for warranty repair or call MTD with the issue. MTD mowers typically are good quality and should run like new for a long time with proper care. Depot may give you a 1-800 number instead of customer service so before you load up the mower talk to them. It does sound like a bad valve seat or rings either one is not typical wear and tear.

1985 gmc k1500 wipers only move at 1 slow spped, interminttent doesnt work at all. How fast is fast and why is fast not working?

Slow is the same speed as 'mist'. Mist is when you twist the control arm backwards to induce a single swipe. If you hold it, you will run the wipers in low speed. Fast is faster than that. Probably by 30% or more.

Turn the wipers on high speed. Wiggle the connector at the wiper motor. If the wipers run sporadically as you wiggle the connector, you either have a bad connector or a bad circuit board on the wiper motor.

Riding mower will barely move

Sounds like it time for a tuneup. Air filter changed, Spark plugs replace and oil changed, plus sharpen the blades while you are at it.

Lawn mower chugging

better late than never, I have the same mower

there is no throttle control on these mowers, if you look under the air filter the throttle is balanced by a spring pulling in one direction and a lever controlled by engine speed. if the spring breaks or falls off the lever will wiggle back and forth, more gas if the engine slows, less if it speeds up. you end up going fast/slow/fast/slow etc.

The tension spring slows the switching down and smooths out the engine speed.

I HAVE A 660 SERIES MTD YARD MACHINE 17.5HP 42

If the speed seems to be different after changing the belts, it should return to normal after they break in.

The 600 series has a top speed of about 5 - 6 MPH, see:
