My monitor randomly turns off.

At absolutely random intervals, my computer screen will turn off. It's not sleep mode, or anything like that. Once or twice I've shaken the mouse to have it jump back to life, but that's it. I'll usually have to turn it off and restart the entire thing. Also, the main computer will stay on, and the monitor's light (the one that tells you if it's on) will stay lit.

Most likely you have a bad INVERTER BOARD.

2nd in line is a burned out backlight fluorescent bulb.

Acer iconia a500 tablet shuts itself off

This might sound a little stupid, but 1 is it plugged in when you put it sleep mode, and when u open the screen do you physically have to turn it back on. Sometimes when you put a computer in "sleep mode" and its not plugged in you lose power slowly

Monitor goes into sleep mode at random

Check your power options in your control panel - default is usually 20 minutes to put monitor to sleep - you can adjust the time there. The monitor itself does not usually have this as a function so I would start there first.

Sleep mode wakes up on it's own

turning off all the power saving items does not help this- it just ensures that it doesn't automatically power down your hard drive or shut off power to your monitor automatically when you aren't using it.
May I suggest Hibernation Mode as an alternative? this mode saves everything you are doing to disc and shuts your computer down completely. when you turn it back on, it will restore what you were last doing onto the screen, so you can pick up where you left off.
you can find more information on this and sleep mode from here: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/335c6a5d-0304-4af1-b135-6bf6c124dc111033.mspx#EZAAC

I too have a dual monitor Samsung SyncMaster 204 setup. My monitors started flickering, then a week later had turn on problems like your describe. I found a fix on this fixya website and followed the fairly techie suggestion. It worked. I wrote up a .pdf set of instructions so others might also benefit. Hope this helps. Doug
