Try a Q-Tip soaked with alcohol and clean the battery terminals. Also, WD-40 works well to. If batteries are left in too long after a total discharge, it can produce acid which will eat away the plating on the terminals. If that's the problem, WD-40 is the best choice to use.

How to i get the exponents to multipy out?

You do not have to do anything special. Just enter what you want and press EXE. Depending on the display type chosen you get
2^20 EXE gives 1048576.000.. for floating point, 1.04857600 *10^06 for Scientific or the same (particular case here) 1.04857600 *10^06 for Engineering. The number of digits after the decimal mark depends on the number of decimal digits chosen in your setup.

How do you find a cube root?

If there is no dedicated key for this, but the calculator can calculate powers (ie x^y), then raise the number to the power 1/3 (or 0.333333333 etc).

Example 8^(1/3) = 2

My calculator keeps going off. The batteries are less than an year old. I would reset it. It works briefly and suddenly stops.

In my opinion your calculator may suffer from the depleted battery syndrome. Certainly the first thing one should do is to replace the batteries with a fresh set. If the behavior persits then there is a problem.
There is no set value as to how long a battery should last. It all depends on the frequency and durarion of use.

How do i do log base x problems (other than log base 10) on the datexx ds 883?

Calculate it the same way as on most other calculators, using the relation

log_b(x) = log(x)/log(b) = ln(x)/ln(b)

In words, calculate the log base 10 of x divided by the log base 10 of the base. You can also use the natural log function instead of the common (base 10) log--just be consistent.
