The NVIDIA GPU (Graphics Processing Unit), located at U20, sharing the heatpipe heatsink with the main processor, has an issue with the reflow soldering to the motherboard.
If you can find a good PC board shop that mounts BGAs (Ball Grid Array parts, have them resolder the part to the motherboard.
Quanta Computers, of Taiwan, built the boards originally. (
http://www.quantatw.com/Quanta/english/service/serviceinfo.aspx) They sell new MBs for $400. If you can get the NVIDIA part reflowed, it will probably cost less and work better.
The heat of operation causes the part to lift from the motherboard, causing separation of the solder joints, and intermittancy, or a complete failure with increased temperature - these parts are designed to run pretty hot.
Good luck.
