I have provided a link to a manual that seems to belong to your model. But unsure what features your model has. This is not available for some reason at the Rowenta USA website.
Refer page 7 of the manual available at this site
http://laundry.manualsonline.com/manuals/mfg/rowenta/1103898336__4605.html?p=1

Self Clean - prolongs the life of the iron
The Self clean function flushes dirt and scale particles
out of the steam chamber.
To operate:
• Fill the tank with untreated tap water up to the maximum
mark and heat the iron to max. temperature.
• Unplug from the mains.
• Hold iron over a sink horizontally, push the steam control
3 past the position and into the Self Clean position
and hold it there: steam will now begin to build up.
After a few seconds water and steam will emerge from
the soleplate, rinsing dirt and scale particles out of the
steam chamber.

After approx. 1 minute move the steam control slide to
the position.
• Insert mains plug and allow the iron to heat up again.
• Wait until the remaining water has evaporated.
• Unplug from the mains and allow iron to fully cool
down.
• When cool, the soleplate can be wiped with a damp
cloth.
We recommend using the Self Clean function approx.
Every 2 weeks. If the water is very hard, the iron should
be cleaned weekly.
Self Clean Valve
The self clean valve prevents the drip hole into the steam
chamber from furring or blocking up. To ensure the iron
continues to function properly, open and close the valve
by sliding the steam control to max then min a few times
after use.

SOURCE: What is the best way to clean my Rowenta iron.

I always run the DG980 till the steam runs dry, unplug and let cool. Rowenta recommends using clear water ONLY. They even provide a small hose & faucet adaper to flush out the steam tank reservoir.

Since it sounds like you do not have it, the next best thing is to use filtered water (I have a 3 cylinder water filter in the kitchen for drinking water), The tank has a plug on the side which should be removed once unit is cold, tank flushed with filtered water and drained completely and leave the treaded metal plug and trim cover off to air dry completely, as well as the blue tank.

How do you repair the retractable cord on a 1500w iron

So many people make a copy of that iron maybe a local repair shop for tefal, black n decker, or another can do it. Taking things apart sometimes is not worth the trouble of putting back together. sometimes it requires special tools. call around first before you try it yourself

I have lost my instructions on how to "self clean"

Straight from the manual:
http://www.applianceinsider.com/storage/user-manuals/rowenta/user-manual/DX8000.pdf

Fill the iron with tap water to the max mark on the water tank.
Be sure that variable steam lever is set to minimum.
Stand iron on heel and plug in. • Set thermostat to ••• setting.
Once heated, unplug iron.
Hold iron horizontally over the sink with the soleplate pointing away from body.
Move the variable steam lever completely to the right and hold in the self clean position for one minute.

Warning: Doing this will cause steam and hot water to be ejected from the soleplate. Take all proper precautions and hold iron away from body.
• Move the iron gently back and forth and side to side until all water has run through plate.
• Carefully wipe all water and material from the soleplate with an old towel, as the water and minerals can stain the soleplate (although this has no effect on glide or performance.)
Warning: Iron and soleplate may still be very hot. Exercise care while wiping.
• Place iron on heel and leave to cool. Before using iron after self cleaning, test steam and burst
of steam on an old towel or cloth than can be discarded.

I have a rowenta iron that leaks a lot of water

Here's a solution . . . Do NOT buy ROWENTA! I've had 3 Rowenta irons. All of them have eventually began to dump water out of the base. . . heck, the Titanic didn't leak as much as a Rowenta iron!

I have a Rowenta Professional iron that is spitting sometning onto dress shirts and leaving permanent marks. There does not seem to be anyone in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada that can address this problem. ...

The iron probably needs to be cleaned. You can use half water and half white vinagar to clean. Hope this helps. Those white pieces are mineral deposit buildup.
