Are you saying that it surges at full throttle and wont idle down or shut off? If so it is likely not a governor problem. Surging is a lean condition. Some models, particularly yard machines, will surge no matter the adjustment unless under a load. If it were a governor issue it would run faster and faster beyond full throttle. IF it wont idle down check the throttle control and throttle linkage and check for a sticking throttle shaft before suspecting governor. Not shutting off could also be in the throttle control. A ground clip is in the control. if the tab is not engaging the clip or the wire is not connected then the motor will not ground. Check those things before messing with the governor, especially if the machine was running good and no one has messed with it yet. Governors don't just come out of adjustment by themselves.

Why wont my Flymo qs 46sd rev ?

does it have a throttle cable fitted?? you really dont need an idle as as soon as you release the opc or dead mans handle it will cut out anyway. engine should be reving at 3000-3100 rpm. if this mower has a briggs and stratton engine fitted, remove the air filter and check the spring and linkege is still attached to the air vane govenor

How do I adjust a throttle on a briggs and stratton engine?

If it the simple handle type throttle cable..push it to full tbottle and follow the cable to the carb..you should fund a small clamp that hold the cable in position..jus loosen and adjust the carb throttle to full throttle and tighten..then push it back to idle to make sure it Idles if not adjust the clamp again until you reach both throttle and idle..good luck..

Briggs and stratton sp 460 engine will idle but not rev

I suspect the push rod for your throttle isn't pushing the throttle lever down on the carb. When you move the lever up on the handle bar then it should move the lever down on the carb. The push rod my be bent, broke or rusted in place.

Engine idoling way to high

An engine will idle too high because of : improper govenor setting, improper carb setting, intake leak, or missing carb throttle plate.

I have a 18HP B&S Vangaurd Vertical shaft on a scag walkbehind motor runs good untill I engage the blades then it seems to draw down to about half throttle until I disengage the blades then the motor...

Check the govenor spring to see that it is not stretched out or popped off...there should be a colored spring on the throttle plate where the throttle lever connects to...also, there are several holes in the plate where the spring attaches...these hole will set the sensitivity of the govenor...you may need to make it more sensitive to hold the engine speed high when engaging the blades

My Craftsman 675 190cc starts in full throttle what could be causing this

sounds like the carburetor is a little gummy and when the engine shuts off it goes to full throttle by the govenor for easy starting but is supposed to return to the set 3600 rpm. try spraying carb clean on the carb and wiggle the govenor arm to make sure it move freely

The govenor rod cannot be adjusted. The springs are intact. Motor revs up but will not idle down. It is 23 HP.

Just guessing here, but if there is no control of the throttle and the engine over revs, then more than likely the governor control is broke. Briggs if famous for that problem. Governor is around 25 dollars and a lower crankcase gasket. Requires the engine to be pulled, lower crankcase removed, remove all pieces of old governor and then re assemble with new governor and gasket.////Before doing all this check that both springs are on the governor on the exterior of motor. If you manually hold the governor arm back, counterclockwise, and it still revs, then you need to replace governor. Don't let it rev for long or it with throw a pushrod or worse. good luck

Ok i have a problem with my Briggs & Stratton 16HP v-twin vanguard engine. When i start the engine and rev it up when i idles back down it sits there and rev's up and down then it straightens out and...

It appears that you have a slight mis-adjustment in the idle speed and idle mixture. To adjust setup, start with at least a half tank of fuel, and have engine at operating temperature (That is warm but not overly Hot). The Briggs & Stratton Website manuals section should show the locations of the adjusting screws if you are not sure of them.
To adjust idle speed set Throttle control to minimum and adjust screw on throttle butterfly to maintain a good idle speed. To adjust idle mixture, screw in idle mixture screw (Lean) until motor falters and then screw out (Rich) until it falters again. Correct setting is the halfway point of these two positions. You may have to re-adjust idle speed again and also the mixture to get best running.
If you are not comfortable doing this, take it to a B & S dealer.
