I was getting a white screen every time I put the power on and used the suggestion by Fionn - squeezing the camera around the screen and it worked like a charm.

Put fresh batteries in and temporarily remove the disk. Make sure the camera powers up. When it does, go to the battery screen and select the correct battery type. Turn off the camera and reinsert the disk, then reformat the disk from the appropriate menu screen.
some camera require batteries that are made for digital cameras. I have a samsung s730 and i use energizer rechargeables and havent had the problem since.
