When I tried to install the software from disk, it to my Asus windows 7 computer it caused windows7 to crash completely.

also check for vibration, the hdd needs no shaking.

Acer usually has a hidden partition which allows you to reinstall the OS back to factory setting.When you boot hold down the ALT + F10 button and it should boot into the recovery disk

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate and could not implement Windows XP mode and MS VPC does not support USB devices: I have both Win XPPRO SP2 and W2003E running in VirtualBox with supports to all my existing USB devices including VGEAR DTV which refuses to works since Vista days and Native Windows 7 (eg. no drivers!).
